Very little is known about the Star Wars series at this moment, except that it takes place roughly 100 years before the events of the first Star Wars prequel film, 1999's The Phantom Menace.

The show will give fans a glimpse into the end of what has become known as the High Republic Era in Star Wars lore.

The Acolyte will follow a former Padawan (Amandla Stenberg) who reunites with the Jedi Master (Lee Jung-ja) who taught her, to investigate a series of crimes.

As they begin their investigation, the, 'forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.'

The cast also includes Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Also reprising his role as Chewbacca from the Star Wars sequel trilogy is Joonas Suotamo, who took over the role from the late Peter Mayhew, who died in 2019.

The series is created by longtime Star Wars fan Lesyle Headland, best known for creating the Netflix series Russian Doll.

The Acolyte will represent a few firsts in Star Wars history, including it being the first program to be told through the evil Sith's point of view.

It will also represent the earliest TV show or movie set within the Star Wars timeline, a full century before the prequel trilogy.

While there have been numerous books, comic books and video games that explore the High Republic era, this will be the first live-action project to explore it.

Headland explained to EW's Dagobah Dispatch podcast in July 2023, 'We are toward the end of the High Republic, leading into George (Lucas)'s prequels, so we are looking at a time period where the Jedi are at the height of their power... (and) there is peace throughout the galaxy.'

'It was very challenging and interesting to make a Star Wars (project) with no war in it. So the question became "Well, what should the show be about if it's not going to be about galactic conflict?"' she added.

'I think that what makes this show different and interesting is that it's from the perspective of the villains of Star Wars,' she added.

'These are people who are using the Force in their own way, dipping into the darker sides of the Force and are doing it without being sanctioned by the larger institution, which, in this case, is the Jedi,' she continued.

Headland added there will be, 'more Jedi than you've seen in any of the other Star Wars content' but there are also more 'morally ambiguous characters.'

'Star Wars is always about some version of the underdog versus the institution. And I just thought it was very interesting to do a show about the bad guys and to set that during that time period made the most sense. So it's kind of almost flipped,' she said.
