Lacey Turner has revealed she thinks she would never have become a mother had she not turned to private medicine to find out why she had two miscarriages.

Women can get NHS tests only after they have lost three babies but the EastEnders star could not think about a third pregnancy without getting answers.

The actress, 33, who returned to work the day after her first miscarriage, told The Sun how there was no aftercare after she lost her baby.

She said: 'If I'd not gone private I’d probably still have no babies. There wasn't really any aftercare. I was told that I'd had a miscarriage and that was it.

'I really felt quite overwhelmed and lost during our miscarriages. We found ourselves confused.

'We had no explanation, just a sudden feeling of the excitement of having a baby to feeling completely empty and lost. To go through that once is hard enough. Earlier doctors' advice and support would have helped.'

A specialist identified Lacey's issue and she has since given birth to daughter Dusty, two, and son Trilby, six months, who she shares with husband Matt Kay.

Lacey described herself as 'lucky' to be able to go and see a private specialist and believes all women in her situation should have that support.

The actress was given the hormone progesterone when she went private, which can help the body hold on to a pregnancy.

The charity Tommy's, which researches the causes of miscarriages, would like the NHS to prescribe progesterone.

Lacey described the NHS as incredible but added that she thinks it needs more funding in this area.

The soap star admitted last year it was 'heartbreaking' to lose her first babies at seven weeks pregnant, and revealed she had a scan 'every week' during her pregnancy with Dusty.

Lacey recently told how she'd love to expand her family further and hopes to have two more children with Matt.

She told OK! magazine: 'We’re so lucky to have the two we’ve got, but I would definitely have more.

'It definitely won’t be any time soon though – we have our hands full at the moment!'
