'You are not alone' Ruby Rose shares emotional photo to mark World Mental Health Day as the OITNB star reveals she was in hospital the day before she began filming hit Netflix series

She's about to mark history as the first openly gay female superhero.

But Ruby Rose has opened up about a struggle of her own as she issues a rallying cry on World Mental Health Day.

The Melbourne-born actress, 33, revealed she was in hospital the day before she began filming the hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black.

Alongside the detailed caption, Ruby shared a picture of herself from a hospital bed.  

She wrote: 'This photo is from right before I started OITNB.

'I’ve struggled with mental health my entire life. I was first diagnosed with depression at 13, then major depressive disorder at 16.'

Ruby goes on to say she's also struggled with dissociative amnesia - a condition that has wiped some of her childhood memories.

She said the condition was sparked by 'traumatic events' in her childhood that she'd blanked out from her memory.

The Pitch Perfect star talks openly about her struggle, saying her life has involved many medications and even suicide attempts.  

But she says her battle with her mental health has made her a stronger person.

 'If you are struggling with mental health just know you are not alone,' she wrote.

'You are not broken, you are not anything but a beautiful being who deserves love and most importantly to live.. and to live a life of greatness.' 

Ruby's famous friends were quick to show their support online, including Justin Bieber's wife Hailey who commented: 'Love you Ruby.'

Fans flocked to her side too, praising her brave message.

The emotional post comes after Ruby revealed she underwent emergency surgery on two herniated discs in her spine. 

She suffered the injury when a stunt went horribly wrong as she was filming her new show Batwoman which is set to air on Sunday.  

Ruby revealed her health scare to fans on Instagram as she shared footage of her undergoing the operation.

She said: 'I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal chord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms.

'Thank you Dr Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love. I am forever in your debt.'  

Ruby said after the surgery she wasn't able to move for 10 days, which made her 'depressed'.
