The Crown star would play Elizabeth Bennet in the streaming giant's version of Jane Austen's 1813 novel, which is already in early development.

The series is being written by Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton, who is working on a 'progressive' version of the novel.

A source told The Sun: 'Dolly is working on a Pride And Prejudice script for Netflix and thinks Emma would be perfect to play Elizabeth.

'She is a big fan of Emma's work, most notably in The Crown where Emma played Princess Diana.

'Dolly is also very progressive and forward-thinking, so thinks that having a non-binary star in the role would be a brilliant move.'

And a sign of Dolly's forward thinking is her choice to select Emma in the main role.

Emma, who is currently working on the queer feminist retelling of 1001 Arabian nights, came out as nonbinary in 2021 and uses they/them pronouns.

At the time the actor said they felt 'more seen' when referred to as 'they' before revealing they wanted to embrace femininity and masculinity rather than chose one or the other.

They added they still loved all the part of them that were feminine but wanted to explore the new part of them that were non-binary and male.

Emma's casting in the lead role comes after Keira Knightly starred as the main character in the Regency-era project in 2007 alongside Matthew MAcfadyen.

According to The Sun, Netflix is keen to move the production of the series on following their successful adaptation of Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson as Anne Eliott.

The news comes as Emma has been working on their new project, 100 Nights of Heroes, and was spotted with their co-star Maika Monroe on set.

Emma and Maika's latest project is a feminist re-telling of 1001 Nights, or Arabian Nights and follows a charming house guest played by Nicholas Galitzine, who arrives at a remote castle, and is introduced to a neglectful husband, his innocent bride Cherry (Maika), and their devoted maid Hero (Emma).

The film, based on Isabel Greenberg’s graphic novel of the same name sees Nicolas play a lecherous villain who arrives at his friends home and enters into a bet that he can seduce his wife Cherry within 100 days.

But Cherry is wise to his plans, and with the help of her lover and maid Hero, tells a series of captivating tales to distract the villain from his cruel intentions.

The film will also star Peaky Blinders star Michael Keogh and singer Charli XCX in her first major film role.
