Chris Martin playfully fired back at host Hoda Kotb when she quizzed him about Coldplay's retirement during NBC's The Today Show on Tuesday.

During a conversation about his new album, Moon Music, Chris also revealed the sweet role his children played in creating the band's new album.

The frontman, 47, appeared on the programme with the band to promote their new music and perform some of their hits live on air from New York City.

While chatting in between songs, American broadcaster Hoda said to Chris: 'So this album is your tenth album, which everyone is so excited to listen to.

'Is it true that you said after your twelfth album that would be the last album that you guys would make?'

The hitmaker admitted: 'Yes, that's true,' which earned a shocked gasp from both the hosts and the audience.

'We all object! Why is that?' exclaimed Hoda, who recently announced that she's stepping down from her role as co-anchor next year.

Opting for a cheeky response, Chris joked: 'Aren't you retiring soon too?,' which saw the crowd gasp and the hosts burst into laughter.

Continuing the joke, he quipped: 'I thought we had a deal that we were gonna go into business together making cookies.  Are you backing out? I'm stopping the band for you.'

'I would never back out,' responded Hoda, who seemed to enjoy the playful retirement joke.

Later in the show, Chris opened up about the sweet role his children Apple, 20, and Moses, 18, who he shares with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, played in the creation of Coldplay's new album.

Moon Music features co-writing from both Apple and Moses, with the former also providing backing vocals on one of the tracks.

The Today Show host Carson Daly asked Chris: 'Seeing Apple and Moses have a credit on Feels Like and All My Love is the coolest thing to see that they're a part of your creative process now, what is that like for you as a dad?'

He proudly responded: 'Well I think with all of our kids, it's just lovely that they don't think we're too bad.

'And they really help a lot and they show us new things, yeah it's amazing.'

It comes after the Viva La Vida hitmaker opened up about the future of the British band, saying two more albums and they're over.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 in September, Chris dropped the bombshell saying: 'We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that's real. Yeah I promise.

'Because less is more and for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It's really important that we have that limit.'

Explaining his reasoning behind the decision, he added: 'There's only seven Harry Potters. There's only 12 and a half Beatle albums, there's about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes.

'Also having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it's almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we're trying to improve.'

However, for fans of the British band, all is not lost, as the lead singer also disclosed there may be other projects in the pipeline and whatever 'side thing' they do would have to be 'something completely different'.

This is not the first time Chris has said the band will stop making music.

Speaking to NME in 2021, the frontman, revealed that he was certain he and his bandmates - Jonny Buckland, 47, Guy Berryman, 46, and Will Champion, 46, - would stop after their twelfth record.

Ahead of the launch of the ninth LP, Music of the Spheres, the hitmaker said: 'I don't think we'll only make 12 albums. I know that's what we'll do.'

Fans went wild for Moon Music, after it was released on Friday, with users on X writing:

'It's wonderful and impressive in every detail and you really feel the essence of Coldplay! It is without a doubt one of the band's best albums, just as Phil said.'

'Moon Music is one of those albums that brings introspection with the feeling of being infinite. So much power and love. I feel transformed and been transported to another dimension. I'll never forget this night!'

He said: 'I think what this album is about is a response to struggling with all the conflict within oneself, within myself, and also all the conflict outside, and working out what the best response is.

'And I think what Moon Music is trying to say is maybe, love is the best response. even when that feels difficult to do, which I definitely find it hard todo a lot of the time. Which is probably why we try and sing about it so much, as a reminder.

'So, a lot of the songs are about struggle, maybe personal, maybe that I see in other people, or maybe a feeling we're all feeling as a species.'
