Halsey teases Britney Spears sample in her new song despite resurfaced interview where she DISSES the Lucky singer: 'I thought Britney Spears wrote her own music'

Halsey teased her latest single, Lucky, which samples Britney Spears' hit track of the same name, off her sophomore album, Oops! I Did It Again, released in 2000.

While revealing the news to fans, the 29-year-old Closer singer, who uses she/they pronouns, revealed that when she was five 'it always felt like Britney was singing directly to' her.

'24 years later, these words hit different. love you forever,' she captioned footage of herself rocking pink hair, a microscopic pair of shorts and a white crop top with the word 'Lucky' across her chest.

In Halsey's new song, she sings nearly the same chorus that Spears did on her gut-wrenching ballad, which goes: 'But I'm so lucky, I'm a star, but I cry, cry, cry in the lonely heart thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night.'

The snippet showed a slight departure from Spears' original words as Halsey opted to put a first-person spin on the lyrics.

In contrast, Spears originally sang: 'She's so lucky, she's a star / but she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking / if there's nothing missing in my life / then why do these tears come at night?'

The track will be included on Halsey's forthcoming fifth studio album, which is currently untitled.

Her release comes seven years after she was accused of dissing Spears following an interview, in which she stated she believed Britney Spears wrote all her own music.

In 2017, the mother-of-one stated that she had 'never considered' herself a 'CEO until recently.'

'At first, it was naivete. I thought every artist did everything themselves. I thought Britney Spears wrote her own music–I thought every superstar was designing their own live stage show, so I always just did those things,' she told Fast Company

Halsey continued: 'I'd never been an artist before, obviously, and we've built this thing really organically. He never told me no, because he didn't know he was supposed to. And I just did everything myself because I didn't have the resources to do it otherwise.'

After the comments sparked backlash, the three-time Grammy nominee took to X (then-Twitter) to clarify: 'Most stuff is easy to ignore but that one hurts cause I just love her and have always spoken highly of her and her genius is undeniable.'

'I love Britney so much and I wish people weren't spreading stuff,' she added in a separate tweet in 2017. 'All I said was it takes a lot of people to complete a song.'

Despite her sincere apology, die-hard fans of the Toxic hitmaker did not seem so forgiving as they accused her of 'shading artists to be relevant' under the interview, which was shared by the X account, Pop Crave.

Halsey has seemingly won over Spears' approval as they are both, now, following each other on Instagram.

In 2021, as Spears fought to end her 13-year conservatorship, Halsey showed her support for the music icon as she expressed her hope for her to be freed.

'I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system,' the MaXXXine wrote. 'She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage speaking up for herself today.'

She continued: Additionally, f**k anyone who thinks they have the authority as an institution or individual to control a person's reproductive health.'

Halsey's new single follows the release of her track, The End, in which she detailed her secret years-long health battle

Halsey's new single follows the release of her track, The End, in which she detailed her secret years-long health battle.

Last month, Halsey revealed she was diagnosed with both systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a 'rare' T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022.

'I told myself I'm giving myself two more years to be sick,' she said. 'At 30, I'm having a rebirth and I'm not gonna be sick and I'm gonna look super hot and have lots of energy and I'm just gonna get to re-do my 20s in my 30s.'

The new album on the horizon is a follow-up to her fourth studio album, 2021's ambitious, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power, produced by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

In 2022, Halsey shared on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogre's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome - known as MCAS - and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.
