Back in the universe: Christina Ricci has returned to the Addams Family in a trailer for the new Netflix spin-off series Wednesday

The trailer opens on a large, wrought iron gate which read 'Nevermore Academy' above its large, creaky doors.

'Nevermore was created as a safe haven for our children,' a woman says offscreen. 'To learn and to grow, no matter who or what they are.'

At this, a pair of students in preppy uniforms turn to reveal they do not have faces while another group howls into the air like wolves.

Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) meets her new roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), who tells her she looks 'pale.'

Wednesday's mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) says she's allergic to color while her husband Gomez (Luis Guzmán) simply smiles.

When asked what happens to her if she's exposed to color, Wednesday replies, 'I break out into hives, and then the flesh peels off my bones.'

Wednesday then monologues in a voice over as she makes her way through a fencing class. She also goes into a cafe where she fights boys dressed as pilgrims and hits the bullseye during archery.

'There's just something wrong about this place,' she comments as a stone gargoyle falls, nearly crushing her.

'And not just because it's a school,' she adds dryly.

She then alludes to a homicidal monster whose bony shadow distorts the wall behind it. Its large, scaly foot can be seen climbing a rickety staircase.

In the woods, Wednesday hears a noise and attacks a man who jumps down from a tree. He grabs the sword she swings at him in between his hands before removing his hat and revealing himself to be Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen).

While Ricci once played the character, she says that Jenna Ortega's performance as Wednesday is 'incredible.'

'I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I went [to set] so I knew [what she looked like in character] and I was like, it's such a great modern take on Wednesday,' she told Variety. 'It's so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but it's then it's incredibly modern and it's great.'

Wednesday 'follows Wednesday Addams' years as a student, when she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents,' according to its IMDb page.
