Gunners make final four

Well, that wasn't exactly an iconic night of Champions League at the Emirates.

Arsenal played with the nervous energy that has crippled them for weeks, and that has led to three defeats in four games.

Sporting gave them a real fright at times, and the Gunners never really got going despite the incredible atmosphere generated by the fans.

But in the end, they survived.

The sturdy defence that Mikel Arteta has built did the job, and a stalemate is all Arsenal needed to book a date with Atletico Madrid in the last four.

Anyway, I need to head off now. Thanks for joining, and I'll see you soon.

HIGHLIGHTS: Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid (agg: 6-4)

Normally, I show the highlights of the game I was covering, but no way am I subjecting you to the woeful three-minute package from the Emirates.

I wouldn't even do that to my worst enemy.

So instead, enjoy an action-packed second leg from the Allianz Arena. Well worth the watch.

What a game, and what a tie it was.

Run it back?

Gabriel Martinelli may not have shown it, but I bet he is secretly gassed that Arsenal are playing Atletico Madrid in the semis?

Why?

Well, the Gunners played against them in the league phase and absolutely battered them, with Martinelli getting on the scoresheet himself.

It was back in October when Arsenal were in their pomp this season, and Martinelli scored the second in a ferocious 14-minute spell, in which Arsenal scored four goals.

They ran out 4-0 winners on the night, and if the Gunners can do that again in the last four, they will be on their way to Budapest.

Time to run it back?

Martinelli: 'Everyone is buzzing'

Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal forward, speaking to TNT Sports:

Everyone is just buzzing in the dressing room. Two times in a row in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Everyone is happy. I think we deserve that. We've been playing well and we deserve that. Now, just enjoy tonight and we have a big one on Sunday as well.
When we play in the Champions League, it is always tough. There is not one single team that is not strong. We knew they would come to try to score. The way they play they are a really good. We did well and we didn't concede. We didn't score as well but we take the draw and we are through.

On playing Atletico in the last four:

We played them in the group stage but this will be a completely different game. We have to earn the right, we have to do things right in the game as well. Let's keep it up and try to win both games.
When you play for Arsenal, you have to know how to deal with the pressure. We really like the pressure as well. We play for Arsenal, we are used to it. It's a semi-final and fighting for the Premier League. Let's enjoy tonight and see on the weekend.

Kane hits the big 50

Harry Kane is just a joke of a striker, he really is.

I mean, we all knew of his goalscoring exploits when he was at Tottenham, but it seems like he has gone to another level at Bayern Munich.

50 goals in 42 games this season? Like, be for real.

Yes, you can say that he plays in the Bundesliga, but he also bangs them in on the regular against the big teams in Europe. I mean, he scored in both legs against Real Madrid.

Best striker in the world? I certainly think so.

21:29

'It was about seeing you through'

Chris Sutton, former Premier League striker, on BBC Sport:

Towards the end of the game, it is about seeing it through - the objective tonight was going through and finding a way.
It wasn't perfect by any means, but defensively they do a lot right. It has been a struggle for a while and things do need to change.

Rice: 'The boys will be ready for City'

More from Declan Rice, Arsenal midfielder, speaking about playing Manchester City next on TNT Sports:

Of course, you have to win every game. We want to win every game in the Premier League. Our record this year has been amazing in all competitions.
It's why we play the game. It's a game of football at the end of the day. [It's about] how much you want it, so I know I'll be ready, I know the boys will be ready, so let's go.

Gunners make history

To say this feels like a historic night feels wrong, but it is.

By winning this tie, Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season. They have never managed that before.

This wasn't quite as impressive as the 5-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid last season, but it will do.

They were knocked out by a rampant PSG side in the semis last year, but luckily for them, they don't have to face the holders just yet.

It's Atletico Madrid who await the Gunners.

Our final four

The Champions League semi-finals to be played 28-29 April & 5-6 May:

  • Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal
  • PSG vs Bayern Munich

They are two tasty ties, aren't they?

21:09

Bayern get past Los Blancos

Well, what drama, eh?

Absolutely diddly squat happened at the Emirates, but it was quite the opposite over in Munich.

It looked as though Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were headed for extra-time, with the visitors 3-2 up on the night with just minutes to go.

But late goals from Luis Diaz and Michael Olise dumped the 15-time winners out on their bottoms. And with that, their season is over.

Bayern will meet PSG in the sem-finals. What a tasty tie.

21:04

'Arsenal need to be much better against City'

One shot on target all game and such little attacking threat — but Arsenal are through to back-to-back Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history. They will have to be much, much better vs Man City on Sunday, no question. But job 1 out of 2 complete.

Rice: 'We want to go one step further'

Declan Rice, Arsenal midfielder, on TNT Sports:

Delighted. So, so happy. A really tough test over two games. To go back-to-back semi-finals is an amazing achievement. We now want to go one step further.
We just got to a semi-final. No frustration. Who cares what people think? You want to be able to score goals, but people who come here always play 4-5-1. The spaces aren't there.
There is noise with everything; this is Arsenal football club. You take it with a pinch of salt. It's a rollercoaster; no one is going to hand you anything in this game.
