Peak-hour chaos as commuters are evacuated from Sydney’s Town Hall train station after fire alarm goes off

Commuters were evacuated from Sydney's busy Town Hall station at peak hour after a fire alarm was set off.  

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was set off at around 6.15pm on Thursday. 

The alarm was set off inside the station due to dust and cobwebs in the area, a spokesman for NSW Fire & Ambulance told Daily Mail Australia.

The evacuation was called off a short time later, but commuters took to Twitter amid the confusion.

'WHY WERE ALARMS GOING OFF AT TOWN HALL???' wrote Jen Tuyet.

'There was also announcements to leave the station but everyone was just confused.'

Transport for NSW said on Twitter that the false fire alarm could prevent commuters from tapping on and off with their Opal cards.

They urged travellers to log into their accounts to request a fare adjustment if required.
