Prestigious doctor appears disheveled in mugshot after trying to push his wife off a scenic Hawaii tourist spot

A prestigious doctor who is accused of trying to murder his nuclear scientist wife by pushing her off a scenic Hawaii lookout appeared disheveled days after his arrest.

Gerhardt Konig, 46, a renowned anesthesiologist, was pictured in a mugshot with messy hair and visible lines on his face as he was officially charged with second-degree attempted murder on Wednesday, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

He was arrested on Monday following a six-hour manhunt, after he allegedly tried to push his wife Arielle Konig, 36, off a hiking trail at the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout in Oahu and beat her with a rock after she refused to take a picture with him.

At one point during the assault, Konig also allegedly pulled out two syringes and poked Arielle with them. It is unclear what the syringes were filled with.

Two passersby witnessed the alleged assault, and called 911.

But by the time Honolulu police arrived at the scene Monday morning, Konig had already fled on foot.

Meanwhile, first responders brought Arielle to a local hospital in critical condition, with serious head and facial injuries.

Still, she was able to tell doctors that her husband had attacked her.

News of the alleged assault shocked Konig's colleagues at Maui Memorial Medical Center - the island's main hospital - who described him  to KITV as 'friendly' and 'quiet.'

A similar sentiment was echoed by the couple's former friends and neighbors in Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon neighborhood, KDKA reports.

Ben Brown, who lived near door to Konig for several years until the doctor relocated to Maui in pursuit of his alleged 'dream job', described the family as 'friendly' and said they were 'good neighbors'.

The couple had been married since 2018, and share a $1.5million home in Maui.

It is unclear how the two met, as Konig worked as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and Engineering while Arielle studied nuclear engineering at Pennsylvania State University.

Konig was also previously married to sex worker Jessica Patella.

The two married when they they were both just 20 years old and stayed married for over 15 years, sharing two children, including a trans man who goes by Kieren and shared details from his difficult childhood in an essay published online and written in second person.

'You don’t remember much of your childhood except for that one Christmas morning your brother came into your room and you hid under the covers for an hour, waiting for your parents to stop fighting. They got a divorce the next year.

Konig had a troubled relationship with his trans son Kieren before the alleged attempted murder on Monday. They are seen in 2017 with Evanescence singer Amy Lee

Kieren wrote about being admitted to psychiatrist hospitals and seeing his mother 'losing blood like trees lose leaves in the fall' as she went through two miscarriages.

Kieren also mentioned his stepmother Arielle positively, writing: 'She calls you by the name you want to be called by.'

He said that he had been estranged from his father, but had recently started talking to his dad again.

'He’s not screaming at you. He’s calm,' Kieren wrote about Konig.

In 2017, Konig shared a picture with Kieran alongside the band Evanescence, writing: 'Evanescence Synthesis Orchestral Tour 2017. What an amazing night with my son!'

By then Konig was already in a relationship with Arielle, and the two seem to have moved from the Pittsburgh area to Hawaii sometime after 2020.

There, Konig took a partner role at the Anesthesia Medical Group in Maui.

He was also employed at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, which said it hired him through an independent agency.

Konig's employment with the medical center has been suspended pending investigation.

But his medical license, which Konig obtained in September 2022, is still in good standing as of early Wednesday morning, according to Hawaii's professional vocational licensing database.

The doctor is now being held on a $5million bail.

Meanwhile, concerned friends are raising money for Arielle's medical expenses and to support her children.

'No one ever thought this would happen, let alone to such a wonderful person,' Christina Ferguson wrote in the description of the online fundraiser - which had netted more than $800 as of Thursday evening.
