Leonardo DiCaprio has frog named after him - and no, it's not because it is only attracted to young females

A new species of frog has been named after Leonardo DiCaprio, and no, it is not because it is only attracted to young females.

The species, which has only just been discovered in Ecuador, is named Phyllonastes Dicaprioi after the 50-year-old actor, in tribute to his environmental work.

Rather than hopping around Hollywood, the frog is found in the Western Mountain Forest in the province of El Oro, Ecuador. It is small and brown with darker spots on its body.

The Dicaprioi frog has a more unique shape to its fingers and has a larger body length to its sister group of Phyllonastes.

It lives between 1,330 and 1,705 metres above sea level.

Researchers from the Ecuadorian National Institute of Biodiversity, Catholic University of Ecuador and San Francisco University of Quito (USFQ) discovered the frog alongside six other new species.

They named the frog after the Oscar winning actor because of his support for environmental conservation.

The Dicaprioi is not the first frog connected with the award-winning actor.

In Ecuador some called the rare longnose harlequin frog ‘Leonardo DiCaprio’s harlequin frog’ after he supported conservation in the country.

DiCaprio, a prominent environmentalist, founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to raise awareness about environmental issues.

He publicly supported the closure of 43-ITT oil block, a controversial drilling project in Ecuador's Yasuní National Park.

The other frogs researchers discovered include the Plyllonastes Cerrogolondrinas, Phyllonastes Ecuadoriensis' and Phyllonastes Macuma as well as the Phyllonastes Plateadensis, Phyllonastes Sardinayacu, and Phyllonastes Personinus.

In a post on Facebook, the USFQ said the Phyllonastes Dicaprioi ‘is named in honour of Leonardo DiCaprio for his support of conservation initiatives.’

They said: ‘We are pleased to announce a major breakthrough in the knowledge of the small land frogs of Ecuador.

‘This study highlights the importance of protecting the unique habitats where these species live.

‘Their names reflect their connection to culture and the environment - some honour the locations and biogeographical features where they were found, while others pay tribute to relevant figures in conservation.’
