A popular kitchen appliance is being urgently recalled over fears it could overheat and catch fire while in use.

Product Safety Australia has issued a recall notice for the BlendJet 2 portable blender after users reported injuries and property damage.

The recall notice warns the metal blades of the blender may break while the product is in use, posing a threat of 'serious injury' if the metal pieces become mixed with food or drinks.

If accidentally consumed, the broken blender blades could cause choking or serious lacerations.

Users also reported that the blenders overheated and caught on fire while charging or in use, resulting in burn injuries and fire damage to property.

'Consumers should stop using the blender immediately,' the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission noted in the recall notice.

Products with serial numbers between 5201000000 and 5542999999 may be affected.

The serial number is printed on the bottom of the base.

The affected blenders were sold online and across the country at retailers including Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Myer, Costo, The Good Guys, Kitchen Warehouse, and Mini-Max.

They were available between October 2020 and November 2023.

In a statement on its website, BlendJet said none of the reported incidents had resulted in 'serious injury or significant property damage'.

The company promised to provide a refund or a replacement base to 'mitigate the potential occurrence of these issues when the unit is used as directed'.

BlendJet 2 portable blenders currently available for purchase are not affected by the recall as they have already been updated.
