Ricky Gervais confirms he is returning to host the Golden Globes for the fifth and 'very last' time

  • The Office star, 58, hosted the show in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before handing the over to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for three years and returning in 2016
  • On Tuesday, Ricky released a statement reading: 'Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this'

Ricky Gervais is set to return as host of the Golden Globes in January. 

Releasing a statement on Tuesday morning, The Office star and creator, 58, confirmed he will host the show for the fifth time yet insisted it will be the last time he acts as presenter for the awards, which take place at the Beverly Hilton in LA.

His statement read: 'Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening'.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria said, 'When Ricky Gervais is at the helm of the Golden Globes Awards, we can always expect the unexpected. We’re excited to see it all unfold on Jan. 5!'

'His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated. It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.'

Both the Oscars and Emmys were without a host this year, however Ricky is set to light up the stage on January 5 in front of the height of the A-list.

This year's show saw Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg make their debut in the prestigious and coveted role.

Due to his famously provocative and often offensive jokes, fans soon flooded Twitter to warn 'snowflakes' and celebrities of what's to come. 

He said: '#RickyGervais returns to humiliate (host) Hollywood celebs as @goldenglobes 2019 announced him as the host... In a world of snowflakery, @rickygervais hosting the Golden Globes has put a smile on my face!...

Last year, Ricky spoke about feeling 'jealous' of Seth Meyers, however confessed his risqué humour would be too perilous given the sensitivities of #MeToo and Time's Up at the time. 

He said: 'I was jealous of Seth. An amazing year to do it. I mean, it would've been the end of my career, but who cares.'
