Hero: Kingsman star Taron Egerton has become the legendary outlaw Robin Hood in a teaser for the 2018 reboot of the classic tale, starring alongside Jamie Foxx and Jamie Dornan
In the preview, Robin Hood is a far cry from his usually sprightly heroic self, with this version of a character being a war-hardened criminal as he goes to war with the authorities.
Donning an edgy leather version of his famous green tunic and hat, Taron is every inch the masked hero, chatting with the authorities of Nottingham who have no idea the criminal they are so desperate to catch is right under their nose.
In a dramatic change-up for the iconic character Little John, Jamie Foxx plays the mentor-type figure transforming Robin into the arrow-wielding vigilante.
Merry men: Oscar winner Jamie (left) plays close friend and mentor Little John, while Fifty Shades star Jamie (right) play's Hood's brother Will Scarlet
Witch hunt: Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn plays the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham
Explosive: The action-packed trailer gives fans a glimpse of some of the epic battle sequences that will appear in the big-budget blockbuster
Meanwhile Fifty Shades Of Grey star Jamie Dornan plays Hood's brother Will Scarlet, and the trailer appears to tease a love triangle of sorts as they go to battle over Maid Marian (played by Bono's daughter Eve Hewson).
An official synopsis for the film reads: 'A war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.'
The trailer is nothing short of dramatic set pieces and epic battles, as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Ben Mendelsohn) is on the witch hunt to catch the masked man stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.
Right under your nose: Hood is seen rubbing shoulders with the authorities in the trailer, who are completely oblivious that he is the outlaw they are trying to target
Transformed: Donning a edgy leather version of the famous green tunic and tights, Hood rocks a mask to conceal his true identity
At war: A more modern incarnation of the Merry Men go to battle against the knights in a hardened adaptation of the 12th Century tale
Forbidden fruit: The film will also depict the famous romance between Hood and Maid Marian (Eve Hewson), although she is married to his brother forming a nasty love triangle
The trailer sparked an enormous reaction on social media, with many comparing this incarnation of Robin Hood to DC comic book star Oliver Queen/Green Arrow.
One wrote on Twitter: 'I absolutely love the new Robin Hood trailer. The bow work on it at times is very unrealistic coming from an archer like myself but I don't mind it. Hell I'm an Arrow fan so I can't complain about that now can I?'
Another added: 'Robin Hood has to be the most remade and retold story ever... but why not?'
Commenting on the Youtube trailer another fan wrote: 'Looking forward to it! Looks much darker and more sinister then I imagined.'
Loving it! Fans rushed to comment on social media how much they loved to first look at the film, which will be released in November for the Thanksgiving weekend
Classic: One of the most famous reincarnations of Robin Hood came in 1991, with Kevin Costner playing the titular hero
Gritty: Russell Crowe also took on the role in the most recent big screen adaptation, released in 2010
This is the latest in a long line of incarnations of the legendary character, with some of the most famous being the Walt Disney animated version (1973), the big-budget Kevin Costner version (1991) and a much darker adaptation starring Russell Crowe (2010).
The film is directed by BAFTA winner Otto Bathurst, who rose to fame following his work on the BBC period series Peaky Blinders.
Following the release date being pushed back several times, Robin Hood will finally open on November 21 ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend, but will face stiff competition from the Disney animated sequel Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2.
At the helm: The film will be directed by BAFTA winner Otto Bathurst, who rose to fame following his work on the BBC period series Peaky Blinders
Coming soon: Robin Hood is set to be released in the US on November 21, and the UK on November 23 2018
