Alfonso Ribeiro, 51, says his daughter Ava, four, is 'doing great' following a scary scooter accident... but her recovery is a 'long process'

Alfonso Ribeiro said his daughter Ava has been coming along nicely since a scary scooter accident the day before her fourth birthday. 

The A Capital Fourth host, 51, said the preschooler is 'doing great.'

'She's recovering wonderfully,' the Dancing with the Stars host told People.

Ava needed to have emergency surgery to reduce the risk of scarring on her face and arms after falling off her scooter in May.

Alfonso said those were 'scary times, scary moments, but she's doing great.'

The Muppets Haunted Mansion actor said Ava, would be him in Washington, DC for the holiday weekend. 

'The progress is coming along as we expected. It's a long, long process. But she's doing wonderful.' 
 

'It’s technically healed,' he said referring to the road rash type wounds, 'but it's a big old scar so you want that to slowly work its way away and that's what we're working on.'

Alfonso said the  damage was 'just on its exterior. So it's nothing that serious — but to your baby... it's a big deal to you.'

Alfonzo's wife, Angela, revealed the accident, sharing a photo of Ava after the crash, explaining that tyke had undergone an emergency procedure 'to hopefully eventually have little scaring on her face and arms.'

'I wasn't standing there when it happened,'  Alfonso told the outlet. 

'Our nanny was there so we missed that, but she came in and — obviously — it was immediate that I knew that we were taking her to a doctor.' 

Alfonso, spoke about the frightening experience in an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, revealing, 'She fell and had basically road rash on her face and arm, and so they had to scalpel off all the skin.'

The plucky four-year-old had recovered her spirits in time to enjoy her Tangled-themed birthday party.

Sharing sweet photos on social media May 14, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum wrote, 'Happy Birthday to my sweet Ava Sue,' next to a series of snaps which included one of Ava in a princess dress and hugging a large balloon of the number four.

Wounds from the scooter crash were visible across her small body. 

'As some of you know Ava had a very difficult week. I’m so proud of how well she handled everything. She’s so brave strong and creative. I love everything about my little girl.'

The Things We Do For Love actor gave a shout out to his wife, who  had joined him in  dealing with 'Long nights with a little girl in pain and having to apply medication every few hours.'

He closed by calling them 'My two hero’s.' (sic)

The relieved mother gave an update a few days after the procedure in a question and answer session on Instagram Stories when one of her followers asked 'How is Ava healing?' 

'She's doing better each day,' the relieved mother wrote over a photo of the little girl who was still healing from the impact.

'She has certainly been a trooper this week.

 'Angela praised her daughter for her 'sweet yet fierce, charismatic, independent & insanely smart girl.'

She also praised Ava for her bravery. 

'And even with her nasty spill the day before her party, this tough girl didn’t complain once about the pain or when I had to apply the ointment every two hours. Happy 4th Birthday, Ava Sue. Beyond blessed to be your mama.❤️.'
