Rebel Wilson has defended her decision to go out partying just a week after her daughter was born via surrogate, saying that just because she's a mother doesn't mean she can't enjoy herself.

The Pitch Perfect star, 42, welcomed her first child Royce Lillian in November, and is raising her little girl with partner Ramona Agruma.

However, the pair sparked controversy when they attended two celebrity parties a week after the baby was born: one for Leonardo DiCaprio's birthday and the other for Paris Hilton's wedding anniversary.

Rebel has now said she didn't appreciate being 'mum-shamed' at the time, and doesn't believe new fathers face the same level of scrutiny.

'It was only a week until I got mum-shamed,' she told her friends Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne on the Life Uncut podcast.

'I was shocked at the criticism because Chris Hemsworth goes to the gym, and people aren't yelling, "Where's your kids?" But why do they do it to every woman?'

The Bridesmaids star admitted she did debate going out so soon after her daughter was born, but said her nanny encouraged her to do it.

'It's a little bit [of] work in a way. Like, I'm talking to directors or talking to other actors that might be useful to collaborate with… and then we were basically home by midnight,' she added. 

The Senior Year actress said women shouldn't be shaming other women for how they parent their children.

'Just because you become a mother, doesn’t mean that you lose your identity as a person. It doesn't mean you can't go out with friends or you can't go on a holiday. It doesn't mean you can’t have a career,' she said.

'People will say I'm in a privileged position, which I am, but I think it's so outdated. Why is it women shaming other women? It always is.'

However, 'mum-shaming' aside, Rebel admitted she was struggling to find a 'balance' between work and motherhood.
