Golden Globes praised for breaking the diversity record - but critics say there aren't enough women of color because NINE of the 10 best actress in a movie nominees are white

  • The Golden Globes dropped its 76th award show nomination list on Thursday
  • In the Best Picture categories, four of  10 films are directed by people of color
  • They are: Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman, Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk, Ryan Coogler for Black Panther, and Jon M. Chu for Crazy Rich Asians
  • However, critics have pointed out that all of the nominated directors are male
  • In the Best Director category, two nominees are people of color including Spike Lee and Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón
  • All Best Director nominees are also male
  • In the two categories for Best Actress, all are white except for Constance Wu

The Golden Globes has revealed one of its most diverse nominations lists yet, but some critics say the award show has snubbed female actors and directors.

In the two Best Picture categories at this year's award show four out of the 10 nominated directors are people of color, a history-making record.

However, critics have pointed out that all the directors are male.

In the Best Picture-Drama category, four out of the five nominations tell the story of people of color. Three of those directors are also people of color including Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman, Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk, and Ryan Coogler for Black Panther.

In the Best Picture-Comedy category, only one director is a minority - Director Jon M. Chu nominated for Crazy Rich Asians.

Barry Jenkins

The Golden Globes broke a diversity record with the 2019 nominee list, where four out of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture Drama or Comedy are directed by people of color. Two of those directors are Spike Lee (left) and Barry Jenkins (right)

Ryan Coogler
Jon M. Chu

The other two non-white directors are Ryan Coogler (left) for Black Panther and Jon M. Chu (right) for Crazy Rich Asians

While diversity is at the forefront in the Best Picture category, other say that this years' nominations have snubbed women in the Best Director department.

No female directors were nominated for the Best Picture Drama or Comedy categories.

In the competition for Best Director, all nominees are also male. They are Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Peter Farrelly for Green Book and Adam McKay for Vice, and  black director Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman and Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón for Roma.
