Kemi Badenoch has suggested that drivers should not get points on their licence for minor speeding offences in 20mph zones.

The Conservative leader said low speed limits were more about environmental issues than safety as she hinted she would scrap them if in power.

It comes after Gary Duffield, a 67-year-old psychiatrist from London, racked up nine points on his driving licence after being caught driving at 22mph in a 20mph zone.

Speaking on LBC Radio, she was asked by Nick Ferrari whether it was wrong to focus on punishing people who have committed minor speeding infringements.

She said: 'I think that these fines should be about safety, not about making money.' Asked whether it was, in fact, a safety issue, she added: 'I just think that the law-abiding people in this country are having to deal with more and more.'

Transport for London says cars hitting pedestrians at 30mph are five times more likely to kill them than those travelling at 20mph. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has also insisted environmental reasons are a factor for the speed limit in the capital.

Now it's time to have your say on the subject in the Daily Mail's latest poll:

In yesterday's poll, Mail readers were asked: 'Should Nato get involved in the US-Israeli war against Iran, as Trump suggests?' Out of more than 13,000 votes, 71 per cent of you said 'no' and 29 per cent said 'yes'.
