Will doctor's appointment with Jeremy Clarkson win him £1m? Contestant, 53, becomes only the second person to reach the final question on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire since the show returned with new host

It is what every Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? contestant dreams of.

And tonight a retired GP will become only the second person to reach the £1million question since Jeremy Clarkson took over as host from Chris Tarrant in 2018.

Andrew Townsley, 53, from Glasgow, makes it to the final stage of the ITV quiz show after a calm and confident performance.

Tonight it will be revealed whether or not he wins the top prize, which he said he would spend on a trip to see Niagara Falls in Canada with his wife Paddy, also a retired doctor.

The last time this stage was reached under Clarkson was in March 2019, when English teacher John Robinson, from Birmingham, worked his way to £500,000 but bowed out on seeing the final question.

Mr Townsley, who has progressive multiple sclerosis, a lifelong condition that affects the brain and nerves, appears on the show in a wheelchair.

The father of two said: ‘When you apply to be on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, you always dream that you’d have the opportunity to answer that million-pound question...’

The top prize was last won 14 years ago by Ingram Wilcox. The ITV quiz continues all this week at 9pm.
