Eric Dane, 53, is writing a memoir about his 'challenges' amid heartbreaking ALS battle

Eric Dane has announced plans to release a memoir amid his ongoing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS.

On Monday Maria Shriver's The Open Field, a subset of Penguin Random House, revealed that the 53-year-old actor will author Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments.

Dane will highlight the days of his life that 'have meant the most,' which include his daughters' births, filming Grey’s Anatomy, getting sober, and the day he received his ALS diagnosis.

In an Open Field press release, the longtime actor said, 'I wake up every morning and I'm immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge and that's exactly why I'm writing this book.'

The father-of-two added, 'I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart.

'If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.'

Dane - who recently shared the brutal reality of the disease - announced in April that he was diagnosed with the condition, which progressively weakens muscles and affects physical function.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's ex Shriver also made a comment as she wrote online, 'It is indeed an honor to publish @realericdane’s new memoir about his account of being diagnosed with ALS and how he is dealing with it.

'I’m so humbled and honored that he chose @openfieldbooks to publish his important story, an imprint known for publishing bestselling books that rise above the noise and move humanity forward.'

The journalist added, 'I cannot wait for the world to read his story and learn more about his intention and his goals. Thank you for entrusting me with your story, Eric!'

Elsewhere in the book press release, Shriver stated: 'Eric wants to give his daughters and family something to be proud of, and this book will not only make them proud, but it will also help people understand what ALS is and isn't, what happens to someone when they get it, and how we can all be compassionate partners to people suffering with neurological conditions such as this.'

The news came a month after the entertainer and his wife Rebecca Gayheart - with whom he shares daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 - called off their divorce.

The actress, 54, filed for divorce in February 2018, but shockingly dismissed the petition in March 2025.

Giving insight into the current status of their relationship, Eric told Good Morning America in June: 'I talk to her every day. We have managed to become better friends and better parents, and she is my — probably my biggest champion. My most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.'

Dane used social media to announce a new initiative for ALS research and funding in September.

He appeared in an Instagram video posted in collaboration with I AM ALS, which was founded by Brian Wallach in 2019.

'I'm Eric. An actor, a father, and now a person living with ALS,' the former Grey's Anatomy star said through strained speech at the top of the recording.

He shared a moving message about pushing for a cure for ALS while wearing a shirt with the I AM ALS logo printed on the front as he showed signs of the neurodegenerative disease's progression.

The caption read, 'We're thrilled to announce Push for Progress, a groundbreaking campaign to accelerate ALS research, expand access to treatments, and secure $1 billion in federal funding for ALS over the next three years.'
