Spotify Wrapped 2025 exposes Aussies' shocking music habits - and the harsh reality crippling the local industry

Australian artists have been left in the dumps after the release of the 2025 Spotify Wrapped rankings.

On Thursday, the music platform revealed what Aussies had been listening to throughout the year, and it seems local artists have not been at the top of playlists Down Under.

Ordinary by Alex Warren, which was released at the end of 2024, topped the charts in Australia and remained there for most of 2025.

The tune was followed hot on the heels by Gracie Abrams' That's So True and Billie Eilish's BIRDS OF A FEATHER.

Back to Friends by Sombr was also a hit with Aussies in 2025, as was APT. by ROSÉ & Bruno Mars.

The list highlights that fresh releases from Australian artists struggled to match the popularity of their international peers.

As for the most-streamed Aussie-made songs on Spotify this year, most of them are far from new releases.

Vance Joy's Riptide came in first place, a song that was released 12 years ago.

Other songs in the category included Sonny Fodera's Somedays (2024), The Kid LAROI's NIGHTS LIKE THIS (2023) and The Temper Trap's 2008 single, Sweet Disposition.

Another classic that still resonates with Aussie listeners is Crowded House's iconic track Don't Dream It's Over, which came out nearly 40 years ago in 1986.

No 2025 releases from Australian artists managed to make the list.

It comes as the Australian music industry faces repeated setbacks, with several festivals cancelled this year.

The latest casualty of our music festival exodus was the much-hyped Park Waves.

Scheduled to kick off in Perth in February for an 11-show Australian tour featuring metalcore band Parkway Drive, the event seems to have succumbed to soaring costs.

Announcing the news on social media with a lengthy post on Tuesday, organisers told fans that the outdoor festival was not going ahead because the numbers simply didn't add up

They join a growing list of cancelled gigs, including Listen Out, Groovin' the Moo, Changing Tides, and Splendour in the Grass.

R'n'B festival Souled Out was cancelled in February, with all three scheduled shows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane scrapped.

Victorian event, The Esoteric Psychedelic Circus Festival, was also axed.
