Joanne Dennehy was born in St Albans in Hertfordshire in 1982 and had what is described here as a 'normal, happy-go-lucky' childhood. In March 2013, she went on a killing spree, murdering three men and nearly killing two more. Why did she did do it?

This is the business of this true crime documentary, in which contributors recount how Dennehy drifted into drugs and alcohol as a 13-year-old after falling in with fairground workers. At 15, she embarked on a relationship with a man five years older than her, John Treanor, a seemingly mild-mannered sort who was with her for around a decade, and whose recollections here make up a big part of this film.

The couple had a child together when she was 17 and then another later on (we hear from their youngest, Sapphire, too, who apparently didn't find out about her mother until she was around 12), but Treanor recalls Dennehy returning to drink and drugs each time afterward, and talks about how he tried to support her despite the abuse he says he received.

This portrait of a life gone off the rails and the questions it raises is bad enough, but it's when you get to the details of the murders themselves that it becomes disturbing on a different level.

Ultimately, Dennehy became only the third woman in the UK to be sentenced to life without parole in prison. Myra Hindley and Rosemary West were the other two. (90 minutes)
