Steve Coogan's hopeless broadcaster first put his foot in his mouth on Radio 4's On The Hour in 1991, as an over-confident sports presenter. His spoof career's ebbed and flowed over the years, ending on a special low when he accidentally shot a guest in the final episode of his chat show Knowing Me, Knowing You. But that was not the end of the Partridge.

This series veers away from the TV formats of his earlier vehicles, following Alan on his uppers as he struggles to revive his TV career. All the while working the graveyard shift on Radio Norwich, residing at a Travel Tavern, and in series two, a static caravan. It helps that seeing Alan in all his unvarnished glory is tempered by the supporting cast, his long-suffering assistant Lynn (Felicity Montagu), guileless handyman Michael (Simon Greenall) and snickering receptionist Sophie (Sally Phillips).

Giving more of an insight into what makes Alan tick - indeed a bit too much at times (the erotic dance dream, say no more) - this is one of the best, most finely tuned and hilarious stops on the pothole dimpled road of Alan Partridge's stilted and stumpy career. (Two series)
