The New Adventures Of Old Christine: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
US comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a divorced mum
Year: 2006-2010
Certificate: 12
This US comedy has a slow first episode but don't let that or its traditional sitcom trappings put you off. Give it two episodes to warm up because it needs that long for its snappy script and its star, Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, to really shine.
The Seinfeld star leads the cast as Christine, a divorced mother who owns a gym and is sending her son to a posh school, where the scornful scrutiny of non-working mothers is not in short supply. Louis-Dreyfus has a great flair for physical comedy, while the script has some superb one-liners and, best of all, the boy playing her son is not at all irritating.
The series was originally shown over here way back in the pre-streaming days of the mid-to-late 2000s, but it never quite took off. Hopefully it'll find a bigger audience this time around. As you watch, keep an eye out for the episode in which Christine looks back at her wedding video, in which they've made her look like her character Elaine in Seinfeld.
The title comes from the fact that Christine's ex, Richard (Clark Gregg), is dating a much younger woman who's also called Christine - so 'new Christine' and 'old Christine'. (Five series)
