Bring Her Back: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Sally Hawkins stars as a grieving foster mother in a tense Aussie horror
Year: 2025
Certificate: 18
Horror is often at its most horrifying when it's set in the home, especially when that's where you're watching it. Bring Her Back, a lean Australian example starring Sally Hawkins as a grieving foster mother who takes in two recently traumatised teenagers, certainly goes for the jugular in that regard.
The first time we meet Laura (Hawkins), she seems cheery if a little eccentric - later on, she starts to seem duplicitous and manipulative. Her old pet dog is stuffed in the corner of the house, for instance, which tells us something about her attitude to death. She gets very stressed if the cat is let out and the boy already in her care seems... unnatural, somehow. What is she hiding? It's not pleasant, we'll tell you that.
More visually horrifying than The Babadook and sinister through most of its length - although there are short stretches of relief, including a rather odd drinking party - Bring Her Back is a searing story of grief, desperation and repressed anger, with an awards-worthy performance from Hawkins at its core.
