The animated family comedy Zootropolis was a massive hit in 2016, both at the box office and at the Oscars, where it took home the prize for Best Animated Feature. There were a lot of reasons why, from the rich world it created (a city with different zones where animals live in harmony - in theory) to the humour that hit children and adults alike without patronising either, to the charm of the voice cast and the fact that it's basically a buddy cop comedy. And that's a type of movie that people have a long history of loving at the box office (Beverly Hills Cop, the Rush Hour movies, 21 Jump Street etc).

Zootropolis 2 took nearly a decade to arrive and it's just as good. Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin are back as rabbit-fox police duo Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, a partnership that the plot of the movie threatens to destroy. The plot involves a dark secret from the founding of Zootropolis that will take our heroes into the hitherto unexplored reptile part of the city, and introduce us to a sweet snake played by Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

There's not too much more to say, really. The film's only downside is the slightness of the emotional stakes but, given how much there always is to look and laugh at on screen - along with a twisty-turny whodunnit of a plot to keep track of - you're unlikely to ever feel shortchanged here. And the sequel has picked up some awards attention too, with both an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA win for animated film under its belt. (108 minutes)
