Between 1962 and 1964, the murders of 13 women were attributed to the Boston Strangler. It was a wave of crime that spread fear throughout the American city and, in 1965, Albert DeSalvo confessed to the murders. He was never actually charged though, and apparently had been about to recant his confession when he was murdered in prison.

Such is the set-up for this true-crime documentary, which is driven by the efforts of journalist Casey Sherman. Sherman has a personal stake in the story - he's the nephew of Mary Sullivan, who is considered to be the final (and youngest) victim of the Boston Strangler. Mary died in 1964, aged just 19, and Casey says he never knew her, but he'd like to get answers for the sake of his mother - Mary's sister - who always had questions about DeSalvo's guilt.

Sherman has found the confession tapes and they're being broadcast here for the first time. Hopefully the process will bring him and some others peace. Although, fair warning, the tapes make for unsettling listening. His efforts are accompanied by testimony from a range of experts and those with personal connections to the case who flesh out the grim life of DeSalvo and propose other suspects. (85 minutes)
