Clint Eastwood has a wonderfully unfussy way of directing films, and Juror #2 is no exception. It's a courtroom thriller, one in which we learn a lot about why each character feels the way they do about the murder case at its centre, from the lawyers (Chris Messina and Toni Collette) to the defendant and the jurors, of whom number two - a tense expectant father played by Brit Nicholas Hoult - discovers he has a very personal connection to the deceased on the very first day.

We won't spoil what it is because it's nice to go into these things blind, but it's the kind of film in which every scene feels important and each casting choice, too. From the moment you see Oscar-winner JK Simmons turn up as one of the jurors, you know there's probably more to his character than the happy florist he appears to be. By the end, the movie leaves you with all kinds of questions about the justice system and whether people can change and, while it's sometimes very tense - especially at the start - it earns everything it asks from you, and more.
