This action romcom was one of the first big cinematic bets of 2024, and wasn't the hit it should have been at the box office. That's a shame, especially as Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt make such a great pairing at its centre. Gosling is Colt Severs, the Fall Guy of the title, an unhappily retired stuntman propelled into a mission to find a missing actor so a movie directed by his ex, Jody (Emily Blunt) can get back on schedule.
Aside from their chemistry, what's nice about the movie is how much of a tribute it is to stunt performers, and how incredible all the stunts look. The director David Leitch (Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train) used to be a stuntman and the movie has actually earned a Guinness World Record for most cannon rolls by a car - they managed eight-and-a-half, besting the previous record of seven set by Casino Royale in 2006.
There's not a tremendous amount else going in on this film apart from Gosling, Blunt and all the stunts, and it doesn't have much to do with the Lee Majors series it takes its name from, either. Gosling, Blunt and the stunts are more than enough, though - this is pure popcorn fun, so make a night of it and enjoy. (126 minutes)
