If you're a Casualty fan, then this acerbic, blackly comic view of life on the NHS frontline will come as a bit of a shock - and it's certainly not for those who don't like the sight of blood. It's all the more shocking knowing that it's based on Adam Kay's book about his own experiences as a junior doctor.

The Paddington and James Bond star Ben Whishaw stars as acting registrar Adam, going from another night spent sleeping in his car into the chaos of another long shift on an obstetrics and gynaecology ward. His blunt asides to camera and his repeated need to change his scrubs place us instantly inside the utter bedlam of Adam's life. But while Whishaw is great, and Alex Jennings is his usual imperious self as a lofty surgeon, it's Ambika Mod who's the real revelation here. Playing stressed-out student doctor Shruti Acharya, this newcomer gives a thoroughly convincing performance as a young medic way out of her depth and struggling to keep up with the demands of the job. One to watch. (Seven episodes)
