Maid: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Moving story of a single mother trying to make ends meet, adapted by the creator of Sirens from a best-selling US memoir
Year: 2021
Certificate: 15
Fundamentally brutal but tenderly told ten-part drama from the US, about a woman's bid to escape the clutches of her dysfunctional upbringing and abusive boyfriend. Based on a best-selling memoir by Stephanie Land, and created by Molly Smith Metzler - who later made Sirens for Netflix - this is a compelling story about the misery humans can inflict on each other and the inadequacies of an unkind system.
Margaret Qualley (Poor Things) plays Alex, who escapes with her two-year-old daughter Maddy from the trailer she shares with her alcoholic boyfriend Sean (Nick Robinson). Her mother Paula - played by Qualley's real-life mother Andie MacDowell, of Four Weddings And A Funeral fame - cannot be trusted and disasters pile up, one after the other. But Alex's spirit and desire for a better life are never diminished in a story that, just like the book it's based on, you'll find hard to put down. (Ten episodes)
