Jenna Coleman stars in a polished take on the life of Queen Victoria that takes us through her younger years. It isn't a docuseries so you can expect plenty of soapy embellishments and some tasteful 'sexing up', but the fact is that Queen Victoria's life was quite exciting enough.

Her youthful infatuation with PM Lord Melbourne (played by a dashing Rufus Sewell), her attachment to her German nanny Baroness Lehzen (Daniela Holtz) and her early courtship and marriage with Albert (Tom Hughes) are among the established facts given added colour, without losing sight of the historical record.

It all looks positively ravishing, with Coleman festooned in countless elaborate gowns (a far cry from the doughty old widow, swathed in mourning black, with whom we are far more familiar) and Albert sporting some impressive uniforms, too. The re-creation of the couple's wedding (series one) and the medieval-themed costume ball of 1842 (series two) are lavish highlights from across the show's run. (Three series)
