Sophie Turner has officially been confirmed as Lara Croft in Prime Video's upcoming Tomb Raider live-action series.

The Game Of Thrones star, 28, will take on the iconic role previously played on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, with production set to begin on January 19.

The announcement comes three years to the day after it was first revealed that Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been tapped to bring the legendary video game heroine to television.

With Phoebe as creator, writer and executive producer, the show has been long in the works.

After months of speculation about creative hurdles and delays, Sophie's casting has been welcomed as a turning point for the ambitious project.

'I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,' Waller-Bridge said.

'It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.

'Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out, Croft is coming.'

Sophie, who received an Emmy nomination for her breakout role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, recently fronted the ITV drama Joan and the thriller film Trust, and will next appear in the British series The Dreadful.

Speaking about stepping into Lara Croft's boots, Sophie admitted she was both excited and daunted: 'I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft.

'She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many - and I am giving everything I've got.

'They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking.'

Turner is said to have beat out competition from Mackenzie Davis, Emma Mackey and Lucy Boynton for the part, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series, backed by a heavyweight team of executive producers, is set to be one of Prime Video's most ambitious launches yet.

It follows news that the Brit actress has reportedly split from her boyfriend Peregrine Pearson again just months after they rekindled their romance.

The actress, who began dating the British aristocrat, 30, last year, is said to have joined exclusive celebrity dating app Raya in a bid to find love, with her profile reportedly spotted on the platform this week.

Sophie and Peregrine were first linked in 2023 and were last seen together at Glastonbury Festival in June.

However, it now appears the Game of Thrones star is single again, with reports claiming she uploaded nine photos to her Raya profile - including holiday snaps and one of her dancing in a hotel room.

According to The Sun, the actress listed her interests on the app as: 'music, pasta, movies, family, sun, and friends'.

Daily Mail has contacted Sophie's representative for comment.

News of their reported split comes after the pair first sparked speculation they'd broken up earlier this year when Sophie unfollowed Peregrine on Instagram.

The actress first revealed she was dating Viscount Cowdray's son in December 2023, months after the breakdown of her four-year marriage to Joe Jonas, 36.

The couple have often documented their relationship online, with Sophie last sharing pictures of Peregrine - known as Perry - in a post from January.
