Millions of Aussies are being warned to brace for intense rain and thunderstorms as a wet weather system sweeps across the country's east bringing an end to a stifling heatwave.
A cool change has moved through parts of South Australia at the start of the week, before sweeping up the east coast late on Monday.
It comes after millions of Aussies sweltered through hot and dry weather as large parts of the country's east saw temperatures hit the mid-to-high 30s and low 40s.
Weatherzone explained the most extensive and widespread rainfall is forecast for Tuesday, stretching from east of Albury to Bourke in NSW and into Thargomindah in southern Queensland.
Thunderstorms are also expected everyday from Tuesday through to Saturday across the country's east, with significant activity in the more populated areas.
The stretch of wet weather is set to contract further inland across NSW and South East Queensland on Wednesday.
Extensive rainfall is expected 'right along the eastern seaboard' from Friday through to Saturday.
Weatherzone explained the wet weather would lash a large area from Melbourne through NSW and up to Queensland's coast.
A low pressure trough was set to bring a 'significant temperature drop', 'burst of southerly winds' and intense rain to parts of Victoria and NSW
While there is uncertainty with weather modules of how far inland the wet weather will travel, Weatherzone said it would impact the eastern half of NSW and Victoria.
Bureau of Meteorology's Miriam Bradbury said a low pressure trough was set to bring a 'significant temperature drop' and 'burst of southerly winds' to residents along the east coast.
Ms Bradbury said the cool change could bring showers, severe storms and flash flooding - with the heaviest rainfall expected in the north and central eastern parts of NSW.
'Severe storms may bring heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding through the course of this afternoon and evening,' she said.
'As we move into Tuesday, we're going to see that storm risk becoming a little bit more extensive across central and eastern parts of the state.
'With storms possible across much of the east coast, severe storms will once again be a risk but mostly covering parts of inland NSW, the western slopes and central Ranges.'
Ms Bradbury added severe storms were forecast for Tuesday, with damaging winds and large hail possible.
She said the wet and wild weather is likely to continue across NSW until Friday as the trough lingers close to the state's coast.
Showers and thunderstorms are also forecast for Darwin, Brisbane and Canberra.
