British girl, 16, is raped in a bar in Crete after leaving her parents to go to the toilet

A British teenage tourist was reportedly raped in the toilets of a bar in Crete just yards away from her unsuspecting parents earlier this week.

The attack took place on Wednesday night while the 16-year-old holidaymaker was enjoying an evening with her parents at a bar in the tourist hotspot of Malia.

The young victim excused herself to go to the toilet, where she was allegedly set upon by an attacker who followed her into the bathroom. 

He quickly fled the scene, but Malian police ascertained his identity upon reviewing CCTV footage from the bar after the victim reported the ordeal later that night, Greek outlet Protothema reports. 

Police are now hunting the 28-year-old Pakistani national they believe carried out the attack.

The shocking case comes just weeks after police in Majorca arrested an Italian man on suspicion of raping a British woman on a beach near Magaluf.

The 20-year-old was held after the victim complained he had forced himself on her after a night out in Palmanova which borders the famous party resort.

The alleged victim is a holidaymaker, according to sources close to the investigation.

Those sources confirmed the alleged rape had occurred in the early hours of April 11 but the arrest did not take place until three days later after detectives took statements from a witness and viewed CCTV footage. 

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Majorca said: 'The Civil Guard in Calvia has arrested an Italian man aged 20 as the suspected author of a crime of sexual assault on a woman.

'The alleged victim and suspect coincided in a late-night bar in Palmanova.

'When the bar closed, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the woman's state of disorientation because of the amount of alcohol she had drunk, to take her to the beach and rape her.

'Officers began an investigation and managed to identify and locate the alleged offender.'

The unnamed Italian was released on bail by an investigating magistrate following a subsequent court appearance.

The criminal probe is ongoing.
