A personal hygiene expert has issued a serious warning about wearing hair ties around your wrist - and why the habit could potentially be dangerous.

The crucial information was posted in a new TikTok video by Mary Futher, who is known online by her popular moniker, Madame Sweat.

Futher is an expert on hygiene and the founder of Kaia Naturals, a clean self-care brand that sells items like deodorant and facial wipes.

But in her latest upload, Futher revealed why you should never wear a hair tie around your wrist, especially ones that are made of fabric.

'Who would have thought that hair ties can actually be a culprit for scalp infections?' Futher began.

She explained that hair ties that are made of fabric act like 'tiny little sponges.'

'When you have them on your wrist, they're picking up dead skin cells, sweat underneath, they can pick up other bacteria,' she revealed.

'Basically, then you're just transferring that over to your hair scalp when you tighten it against the back of your head,' the expert added.

However, if you are not someone who has a sensitive scalp, you might not have to worry too much about this.

But at the end of the day, she would still not recommend wearing a hair tie on your wrist.

'You're just using them as a dirty sponge,' she stressed.

In the comments section of her video, some people shared their own tips for keeping their hair ties clean.

'I just wash them with shampoo once a week,' one person wrote.

Another shared, 'I didn't know that mine is going in my pocket or toiletries bag now.'

'When I wash mine I put them in a garment bag and chuck them in the washing machine. Then dry them in the dryer,' someone else typed.

'I wash my hair ties all the time and most of the time I don't even wear them in my hair,' one user seconded.

But this isn't the only hygiene tip that Futher has offered in recent months.

In October, she revealed how you can prevent your towels from smelling like mildew.

She revealed, 'It's not pretty but you can hang it over the top of the door - make sure the top of the door is clean.

'Or if you have a glass shower door, hang it over the shower door to make sure that it is spread out, no folds and that it can dry properly.'
