I don’t know about you but every time I open Instagram right now I’m met with the same unexpected sight: flocked denim. Yes, it's denim – but with a velvety, raised pattern that instantly transforms it from something you’d wear on a Saturday morning coffee run into something you’d happily style for a December night out.

It’s the kind of trend that sneaks up on you: one minute you’ve never heard of it, the next you’re saving outfit after outfit wondering how many pieces is too many to add to your basket.

It started with statement jeansMassimo Dutti’s high-waisted flocked flares (£99.95) have been quietly gathering a fanbase, while H&M has made the look more accessible with its under-£55 pair.

Then Hush stepped in with an entire two-piece: a rich chocolate-brown flocked denim jacket (£87) and matching barrel-leg jeans (£125) that look far more premium than their price tags. Suddenly the high street was full of flocked options in every silhouette imaginable.

Next has completely leaned in, offering everything from a throw-on-and-go flocked denim mini dress (£48) to matching blue co-ords – the jacket (£45) and mini skirt (£34) even come approved by Rochelle Humes, who styled the look so well you’ll immediately want to recreate it.

And Mint Velvet’s elevated khaki jacket and jeans give the trend a grown-up polish, while Aligne’s mini skirt shows how easily it slots into a weekend wardrobe too.

Perhaps the biggest sign that flocked denim is officially a thing? It’s already reached the supermarkets. Tu’s boxy jacket and mini skirt set delivers the same party-season energy at wallet-friendly prices – ideal if you want to try the trend without committing to a full investment.

If you’re looking for something that feels festive without going full sequins, flocked denim is the unexpected hero of the season. Soft, decorative, a little nostalgic – and, apparently, everywhere.
