What item could take you from the office to the bar (with some clever styling) and equip you for a lazy brunch? Alongside a simple white tee, a crisp striped shirt can be one of the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe. Effortless, cool and perennially chic, the classic button-down is a staple that can easily be dressed down or elevated.
For a casual spin, try an oversized shirt and leave it untucked (if that’s too nonchalant, do the half-tuck, where you tuck just one of the front sides of the button-down into your trousers). Pair it with some barrel-leg jeans, trainers and a chunky knit slung casually over your shoulders, and you’ve mastered our go-to coffee-run uniform.

When it comes to styling the striped shirt for the office, remember to have a little bit of fun. It’s minimal effort to grab a pencil skirt or a pair of tailored trousers (especially if you’ve been watching reruns of Suits) but if your office dress code allows it, leave those overly-corporate outfit formulas for interviews and board meetings.
Instead, layer the shirt under a boxy blazer or over a white tee, fully tuck it into some pleated jeans or wide leg trousers (a classic blue and white stripe looks really chic with some beige slacks) and slip on a pair of loafers (or Mary Janes) and a leather belt – the latter is another wardrobe staple that will level up an otherwise quite basic look.
In the evening, unbutton your shirt to reveal some cleavage (you could even slip one shoulder off) and roll up the sleeves. You could reach for a silk slip skirt (a shade of beige for springtime) and some kitten mules, and make sure to finish it off with some statement jewellery (a pair of chunky hoops or layered dainty necklaces will do the trick).
