Over the years there is no doubt that the world of skincare has drastically expanded - gone are the days of moisturisers and face wash being the height of care - there is now a whole array of products to smooth, brighten and plump your skin as you age.

This can range from injectables to temporary fixes like anti-ageing glow drops, toner pads and vitamin C skincare.

Perhaps the most divisive new product to hit the shelves though is the LED face mask

Known for being one of the pricier at-home beauty products, social media feeds have become flooded with influencers sporting a robotic looking mask while going about their daily business.

But it can be confusing to know if light therapy really is the solution for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, calming blemishes and improving skin tone.

To find out, the Daily Mail team has put six masks to the test to see if it's really worth investing.

Best LED face masks: Quick list

How we test

When testing beauty products like LED face masks, we try them out for at least a few weeks, to ensure we're able to assess results. As well as evaluating a mask's performance, we also look at things like comfort, ease of use and value to get a true measure of their abilities.

Together with a group of reviewers at the Daily Mail, we collate and compare how well each product performs, so you can choose the best mask for your needs.

We've picked the CurrentBody Series 2 mask as our favourite overall product because it is easy to set up and secure, results are fast and coverage is huge.

A standout feature are the effective eye guards, which allow you to still use screens while wearing the mask. It also switches off after 10 minutes, which is handy.

In our tests, we found once the mask is attached there is no chance of it slipping off, so it means even on a busy day you can undergo your treatment while doing the dishes, sorting out laundry or even rushing around.

After prolonged use of this mask, our skin definitely looked brighter and felt really soft. It's great if you don't have any specific skin concerns but are looking for an overall boost in your complexion.

At £200 for non Beauty Pie members and £120 for members, this price-point on this mask is fantastic for such a product.

The material is all silicone, making it easy to wrap around the face. However, the straps are quite fiddly and at times, the mask can feel flimsy.

The eye slots are great, reducing glare and making it easy to use anywhere. However, we would recommend avoiding screens while wearing this mask, as it does distort the colours of a screen.

We also like the practical mouth and nose holes. They can be moved around to fit your face, a standout feature of this mask.

As it's not quite a powerful as some others on the list, we think is better for general use and those looking for more hydrated-looking skin.

It's not in the user manual but another tip with this mask is that it can be used on your chest to help elasticity loss, as it flattens out completely.

We noticed this mask helped reduce our skin pigmentation, giving an overall fresher look.

The best aspect of this mask is the fact there are so many settings, meaning you can really tailor it to your needs.

Each mode can be selected individually for a quick 10-minute session but for those looking to really take the time to relax while wearing the mask, automatic mode uses all the LED lights for a 15 minute focus session.

The eye shields blocked out light nicely, but the lack of holes for the mouth and nose can make you feel claustrophobic at times.

We found its amazing if you have acne prone skin as after a couple uses redness was reduced and breakouts seemed to be minimal.

A standout feature was its sleek packaging, it comes in a small zip-up bag, making it perfect for travelling.

4. Best multi purpose LED face mask: ReGlow LED Mask

The ReGlow LED Face Mask from Ulike is completely solid rather than being made of silicone. This made the process feel less fiddly and the mask extremely secure.

This mask is best for treating multiple concerns because of its four different modes - glow, firm, rejuvenate & clear.

The mask focuses on brightening, calming redness, targeting acne and strengthening the skin's natural barrier, making it worth the price tag.

It helps with acne in just two weeks and can then be used as a long-term tool for a radiant complexion.

We found with this mask, its best to lie down and let it do its thing for the allotted amount of time. It leaves no bit of skin uncovered.

The built in goggles and fit of this mask is extremely comfortable, rather than being a silicon material it is hard and sturdy.

It's also completely cordless, which makes this mask really stand out. However, we did find it quite heavy and would recommend lying down while using it instead.

After just one use the mask makes your complexion instantly brighter, which really made it stand out.

It can also be used to reduce scars from skin-picking, which makes it feel really targeted.

What's fun about this mask is that you can use the Lustre app to customise light combinations across the forehead, eyes, nose and cheeks, which means you can change it based on how your skin looks and feels that day.

It is easy to use and wireless but because it is quite heavy we would recommend lying down while using it.

In addition to the white mask, I received eye shields, an adjustable strap, a manual controller, USB charging cable, linen storage bag, and the instruction manual.

The device's controller needs to be charged for 180 minutes before its first use, and then you're ready to go.

When I told Sinead my goal at the end of the six-week testing period was ditching concealer, and doing away with full-coverage makeup entirely, she told me 'consistency is key'.

'We recommend using it three to five times per week for 10 minutes, you could use it every day or night if you desire but no less than three times to see results,' she said.

I took my 'before' selfie and realised how tired my skin looked - especially around the eyes. While I've never suffered from acne in my 20s and 30s, barring the occasional PMS flare-up, I was struck by how dull my complexion looked in the picture.

So, I wrapped the mask around my face every weekend, and squeezed in a 10-minute session once or twice after work, for a total of four treatments per week.

My favourite thing about the mask is the timer, which meant I could close my eyes and relax without worrying about overexposure or fretting about how much of the treatment was left.

The corded remote is easy to use as it just has one button - which turns it off and on.

I've seen women reading magazines or doing chores with the face mask in TikToks that might give those less clued into the world of skincare a fright - but I found the red light slightly disorienting despite the eye protectors.

Before I knew it, six weeks were up - and I was impressed by the results. The dark spots around my mouth and on my cheeks basically vanished, some of the fine lines had definitely disappeared and, my skin was visibly bouncier.

Our verdict

With LED face masks consistency is key, we would recommend using them three times a week for at least a month to see the best results. Our personal favourite is the CurrentBody Series 2 mask, as it delivered the most noticable results. However Beauty Pie's budget version is also worth considering, especially as it can be flattened out and used in other areas.

They're an amazing way to make you feel like you're treating yourself at home and eventually the differences are noticeable - but it does take work.

So while they're pricey, they're an investment guaranteed to make you feel like the best version of yourself.
