Former '80s pop star unrecognizable as he returns to the spotlight decades after he left the music industry

A former '80s pop star has returned to the spotlight... and he looks very different from his glory days.

Glenn Medeiros, now 55, was skyrocketed into the spotlight in the late 1980s and spent years dominating the charts.

But in the early 2000s he left the spotlight behind to pursue a career in education.

Now, he has reemerged more than two decades later as he was recently featured in a series of videos shared to daughter Lyric Medeiros' TikTok page, and he's practically unrecognizable.

Medeiros started his career in 1987 at age 16 when he won a local radio competition in his hometown in Hawaii thanks to his impressive cover of George Benson's song Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You.

A small, local independent label was so in awe of his talent they decided to produce his version of the song, and to his surprise it became a worldwide hit.

The cover became a massive success and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, turning Medeiros into an overnight sensation.

His debut album Glenn Medeiros came out later that year, followed by his second LP Not Me in 1988.

His song Un Roman d'amitié (Friend You Give Me a Reason), which he sang with French artist Elsa Lunghini, stood at the number one spot on the French chart for six consecutive weeks.

Medeiros went on to release seven more albums and a slew of popular hits - including the song Under Any Moon which was on the Karate Kid Part III sound track - and She Ain't Worth It with Bobby Brown.

The latter reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and was certified gold.

Despite his success, Medeiros left the spotlight behind after his last album With Aloha was released in 2005.

He ultimately attended the University of Hawaii at West O'ahu followed by the University of Phoenix for his master's in elementary education.

He got his doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Southern California in 2014.

The former teen heartthrob has now spent years working as a principal in Honolulu and raising his two kids, daughter Lyric and son Chord, with wife Tammy.

While speaking to the Today show, Lyric, 24, said it wasn't until she was in middle school that she truly understood just how popular her dad had been.

'I remember adults coming up to me and saying, "Oh, Medeiros! Like Glenn Medeiros, the guy who sang that love song!"' she recalled.

'And then they start singing it in front of me. Older women would come up to me and say, "Oh, he was a heartthrob!"'

Lyric, who has now followed in her dad's footsteps and has competed in various singing competition shows including American Idol, joked that her dad is always a little hesitant to appear in her videos.

'It's a rare occasion to have my dad willingly film a video with me, and most of the time, I just ask him to stand in the video while I do a trending sound or something like that,' she said.

'It's not my first choice of things to do,' he added. 'I'm not really so much into doing the videos, and so every time she asks me to go on, I’m like, "All right, OK."

'I'm not much of a dancer, you know, and Lyric's a good dancer, so I try to have fun with it as much as I can.'
