It goes without saying, shopping for trousers often feels more like a chore than retail therapy. The rigor of finding a remotely flattering pair can sometimes be likened to bootcamp drills - *trousers off*, *trousers on*, *jump* to hoist them up, hate them, repeat. Throw in some burpees and you’ve got yourself a full body workout.
Even more frustratingly, trousers often have little to no hanger-appeal so it can be hard to distinguish what will be baggy, fitted, too long, too short, etc., and one shape and size definitely does not suit all.
But, we can’t all live in our denim jeans day in and day out. Plus think of all the chic outfits you could be missing out on.
The good news is, the high street is beginning to hear you, and your favourite brands are now catering for a wider variety of heights, shapes and sizes. From Next’s vast tall and extra tall selection to Boden’s petite and Monsoon’s extended size pieces.

So, as a fashion expert and stylist I’ve done the leg work for you. Having scoured the high street for trousers for every size and occasion - including elasticated waistbands for those comfort-first kinds of days - here are my top picks.
Best for tall
Reiss really know how to make trousers that flatter the leg. These cream high-waisted flares are cut to create an elegant and slimming shape with a smart tailored edge. Their regular length is ideal for tall women up to 5’9 and their long options are a dream for taller women or those looking to style these with heels. Note, they also have a petite option too.
These might be on the pricier side, but in 100% wool, Holland Cooper’s wide-leg trousers are worth the investment for those on the tall side. With plenty of room in the high-waisted body too, they’re not only elegant but also comfortable. They come in multiple colourways, with the Walnut being my current favourite.
Next have an excellent selection of extra long and even extra extra long leg trouser options. This denim-look tailored style feels particularly useful as a smart casual jean-trouser hybrid. The crease front makes for a streamline cut which can be selected in the perfect length for your height.

Best for petite
Finding cropped trousers for petite women is no easy feat, so Boden’s ⅞ trousers are just the ticket. Made of mostly cotton they make for comfortable and breathable wearing all day long. Smart with heels and trendy with loafers or retro trainers.
Whistles’ petite collection has been meticulously designed for smaller frames as they don’t just simply crop leg lengths all the measurements are tailored accordingly. Particularly when it comes specific cuts such as barrel leg trousers, it’s near impossible to tailor a regular length pair nor should you have to. This 100% linen pair is just the ticket, and a high quality stylish staple for those looking to update their spring-summer wardrobe.
These khaki straight leg trousers could be your newest go-to style. The more relaxed cut and creased front makes them a perfect hybrid of smart and casual - so easy to style up and down. They look particularly flattering on the leg and stomach with a small heeled boot.
Best for plus size
Faux leather trousers that hold their shape and are comfortable are hard to come by, but River Island has made just the pair. In a contouring cut and front seam that streamlines the leg, they’re not only trendy but super flattering too. Pair with sock boots for top style points this season, or wear with a heeled sandal on the warmer days ahead.
A classic shade and shape that will work hard in your wardrobe, these neutral wide leg trousers are worth their higher price point. Featuring front double tucks and a cinching high waist they create a super flattering silhouette. They’re perfect for all seasons and easy to style up with most colours.
Monsoon seems to just get better and better - and now they're offer sizes up to 24 in most of their styles they're even more of a favourite. These navy flares create a wonderful leg elongating and slimming effect from getting their clever cut. Pair with their matching top for an effortlessly put together look.
Best For An Elasticated Waistband
Baukjen’s fabric is always reliable for its comfort and quality. Their burgundy palazzo trousers with an elasticated waist are a dream to wear for looking chic while running errands. Or, throw on a heel and blouse for an instantly elevated yet secretly comfortable outfit.
These soft leather trousers are without doubt expensive but may well become your new favourite trouser. With a soft lining, these are ultra comfy while looking like you’ve made a huge amount of effort. Sport with trainers, loafers or heels and watch the compliments come rolling in while feeling comfortable around the stomach. Just think of the dinners these could come in handy for!

John Lewis’s new-in camel bootcut trousers are a perfect fit to take you from a day at the office to an evening event. Featuring a sleek high-rise waist and elegant pressed crease front they give you a contoured silhouette appropriate for all settings.
