A popular TV show starring David Mitchell has been shelved after three years after the comic said he was 'too busy' to film it again.

Broadcast on Dave, the premise of Outsiders is brilliantly entertaining - comedians are thrust into a post-apocalyptic scenario where they must see if they have the survival skills needed to live outdoors.

There was a more useful purpose to the show and contestants were taught important life skills throughout each seven-day challenge.

Airing between 2021 and 2023, Mitchell explained that his role on the show was to be 'a slightly befuddled, irascible and indecisive leader'.

But despite earning favourable views from fans and critics alike, including praise for its 'refreshing and very amusing' premise on IMBd, Outsiders may never return to our screens.

UKTV execs said at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival: 'It is not currently returning and we have announced that.'

The executives continued: 'Would we look at that show again in the future? Maybe. Not currently. He loved doing it. We loved working with him.

'We definitely would be interested in other ideas with David Mitchell...

'We have a fantastic relationship with him. He is a stunning piece of talent.'

'What a dreadful phrase that is. But yeah fresh new interesting ideas he is pretty busy.

'He is quite a difficult man to get a lunch appointment with. We never say never absolutely.'

News of the shelving of Outsiders comes amid a very exciting time in the comedian's career as he is enjoying mammoth success elsewhere thanks to his role in the BBC crime drama Ludwig.

It stars Mitchell as a puzzle enthusiast who decides to take on the identity of his police detective brother in a bid to solve his disappearance.

Ludwig was renewed for a second season in October of last year, with its first episode attracting an impressive 9.5 million viewers.

When asked what fans can expect from the second season, Mitchell admitted that its details need to remain under wraps.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I can't tease anything. The scripts are being written now, and it wouldn't help any viewers to know any more about it than that. We will be shooting this year.

'Our hope and aim is to give more of the same: the ongoing, intriguing narrative and the same weekly, resolved mystery.

'Other than that, I don't really know much more, but I'm also under instructions not to say any more!

'I'm big on going into a program knowing only the bare minimum because surprise is a huge part of entertainment.'
