Legendary NFL quarterback John Brodie dead at 90: 49ers mourn loss of 'all-time great'

Legendary NFL quarterback-turned golfer John Brodie has died at the age of 90, the San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday

San Francisco co-chairman Dr. John York hailed Brodie as 'one of the franchise's all-time great players.'

In a statement, York said: 'He will always be remembered as an important part of 49ers history. We express our deepest condolences to his wife, Sue, and the entire Brodie family.' No cause of death has been announced.

The quarterback was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 2009, having spent his entire 17-season career with San Francisco.

Brodie was drafted third overall in 1957 and went on to throw for 31,548 yards and 214 touchdowns across 201 games.

He remains the longest-serving 49ers player in history and his jersey number, No 12, was retired by team in 1973. Brodie was named NFL MVP three years earlier.

After hanging up his cleats, Brodie embarked on new careers in both broadcasting and professional golf.

He spent 12 years as a football and golf announcer on NBC before deciding to play golf full-time. He became eligible for the PGA Senior tour when he turned 50 in August 1985.

Brodie, who was born in San Francisco, had played both football and golf at Stanford before joining the NFL. He also tried his hand on the PGA Tour for two seasons in the late 1950s.

The retired quarterback went on to play in 230 events on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the 1991 Security Pacific Senior Classic and missing the cut just three times.
