Man United on the agenda? Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho spotted deep in conversation in the stands ahead of Euro 2024 opener between Germany and Scotland in Munich

Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho were pictured deep in conversation in the stands ahead of Scotland's Euro 2024 opener against Germany. 

The former Manchester United bosses also smiled for a selfie as they settled in for a huge match in Munich.

Scotland fans will hope Ferguson's presence will be a boost to their players as they look to qualify from the groups of a major tournament for the first time. 

An estimated 150,000 Scotland fans have descended on Munich and they will be delighted to have a football legend boosting the Tartan Army numbers.  

Mourinho wrote on his Instagram page: 'With the Scottish legend! Great man.'

The Portuguese coach was been revealed as the Fenerbahce boss to much fanfare from the supporters of the Istanbul-based club. Tens of thousands of fans attended his unveiling. 

It was unclear what exactly Ferguson and Mourinho were discussing ahead of the game, but could Manchester United have been on the agenda?

The two have discussed United before. Ferguson advised Mourinho to sign Dele Alli for the Red Devils, as the Portuguese revealed on an episode of Amazon's All or Nothing. 

There is plenty to discuss at the moment. Erik ten Hag is remaining at Old Trafford after the club decided he was the right man to take them forward after a review process. 

The Premier League giants have thrown their weight behind the Dutchman and are discussing a new contract, despite sounding out potential candidates after an underwhelming season at Old Trafford which saw his side finish eighth.

Mail Sport sources have disclosed that ten Hag’s case was strengthened by the club’s shock FA Cup Final victory over rivals City.

Potential replacements, including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank were sounded out by United officials, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS leading the process.

Mail Sport understands that United officials want to see how Ten Hag operates under what they believe will be a new structure aimed at ensuring he is given the best opportunity to succeed.

Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund - two of the club's banner signings ahead of the start of last season - both struggled before finding form, while Mason Mount, who the club bought for £60m from Premier League rivals Chelsea has been injured for much of his time in Manchester.

Amid a punishing lack of availability at times, Ten Hag has been lauded for his development of young players, with Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho two standouts of the 2023-24 campaign.

Omar Berrada is due to arrive from Manchester City as chief executive on July 13. Jason Wilcox has already joined as technical director while talks are ongoing to bring Dan Ashworth to Old Trafford from Newcastle as sporting director.

Discussions with Ten Hag are thought to have been positive with both club and manager aligned. Talks on a contract extension have opened.
