With a new year comes a plethora of new motors, as 2022 looks set to continue car makers' transition away from internal combustion engines as the drive to electrify their model ranges takes pace.

Though there will be new car hitting the market for the first time this year that offer petrol and diesel engines - as well as hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

We've picked out 22 top choices for 'mainstream' cars you can get your hands on for the first time in 2022 - from dinky battery-powered city vehicles that cost £6,000 to Britain's latest luxury SUV that will set you back £100,000. 

1. Alfa Romeo Tonale 

Price: approx £30,000 

The Tonale is set to sit below the Stelvio to create an SUV range for the Italian brand. And it will also feature plug-in hybrid technology

Alfa Romeo is a brand that is in much need of some reinvigoration. While it has the impressive Giulia saloon and Stelvio SUV in the range, the line-up is extremely limited with the Mito supermini and Giulia hatchback killed off in recent years.

For 2022, it should be adding the much-muted Tonale SUV, which will sit below the Stelvio and likely share a platform with Jeep's Renegade, though tuned to provide a more engaging driving experience than its sister brand's compact offroader.

Alfa has hinted that it will feature plug-in hybrid technology along with a choice of other drivetrains, though not full electric. The Italian maker's first EV will be the Brennero, arriving in 2023.

2. Citroen Ami

Price: approx £6,000 

The cheapest new 'car' coming to the UK market in 2022 will be the dinky Citroen Ami electric quadricycle, which has a range of up to 46 miles and a starting price around £6,000

Let's get this technicality out of the way first; the Ami is not technically a 'car' as it is categorised as a 'quadricycle'. However, offering a range of up to 46 miles on a full charge - and a top speed up to 28mph - it will likely become a transport solution for many living in major cities.

The French maker, having confirmed that it will sell the tiny battery model in Britain from 2022, took over 1,000 online reservations for the Ami within a fortnight, at the cost of a £250 deposit.

These reservations were on top of the 14,000 individuals who have registered their interest in the Ami for when it arrives in the UK in spring.

3. Cupra Born

Price: from £33,735

The Born will be Cupra's first electric model and be closely based on the VW ID.3, though with sharper driving dynamics and styling that is aimed at drawing more youthful customers

Cupra - the Spanish sporty spin-off brand from Seat - will soon have a new fully-electric car in its forecourts. The Born is due to hit showrooms this year, with the hatchback essentially a re-badged Volkswagen ID.3.

In keeping with Cupra's performance image, the Born should - on paper - be sharper to drive than the VW sister model and the new marque will also want to attract a younger audience with its trademark bronze features and sustainably-sourced cabin materials designed to appeal to Gen-Z customers. 

Production of the Born in Martorell, Spain - Europe's largest electric vehicle factory - marks the start of a new era for the brand, which is headlined by its aspirations to be a fully-electric auto maker by 2030.

With the UK ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars coming in 2030, most manufacturers have outlined their plans to transition to EVs before the end of the decade.

4. Dacia Jogger

Price: from £14,995 

How's this for a bargain? The Dacia Jogger is a family estate car with seven seats that will start from a shade under £15,000 in the UK

We're exceptionally excited about this one. A seven-seat family car that costs less than £15,000 should not be sniffed at - and it looks pretty good too.

It's called the Jogger and is - of course - from budget-friendly brand, Dacia. The estate car is essentially an extended version of the Sandero and will start from a staggering £14,995 - that's £1,650 less than the entry Ford Fiesta, which has been the best-selling car in Britain for the last 12 years.

First deliveries arrive early in the year and when they do the MPV-styled crossover will be the cheapest seven-seat car in British showrooms, and by some distance. It will be half the price of the next most affordable example sold here.

5. Fiat Panda 

Price: approx £11,000

The 2019 Centoventi concept was Fiat's hint to how the 2022 Panda could look - if we do eventually see it this year

While there has been little information about it so far, Fiat's long-running Panda is due to be replaced this year to sit alongside its new - and electric-only - 500 city car.

The Italian marque teased us in 2019 with the preview of the Centoventi concept, which hinted at how the Panda could look in 2022. Bosses have said it will stay true to the roots of the original - low-cost motoring with a focus on value for money.

It's likely to share platforms with other brands under the Stellantis banner, which means it will likely share parts with similar-sizes Citroens and Peugeots. 

6. Honda Civic 

Price: approx £20,000

The next-generation Civic will be the first in some time not to be built in Swindon following the closure of the factory in the summer

While we're excited to see the next-generation Civic, it comes with a hint of sadness. That's because the new Civic is the first in years not to be built in the UK, following the Japanese brand's decision to close the Swindon plant earlier this year.

For 2022, the Japan-built Civic will retain its sharp looks but also offered only as a hybrid, taking the fight to the Toyota Corolla - which is built in the UK, at Burnaston.

Don't be fooled by the images of the new car that have already been shown by the manufacturer - it might look like a saloon but does have a hatchback boot, which is vital for UK customers. 

7. Hyundai Ioniq 6 

Price: approx £50,000

Hyundai is due to add to its growing electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the Ioniq 6 performance model, which has been previewed by the Prophecy concept (pictured)

Hyundai unveiled the Prophecy concept in 2020 and again showed it at the Munich Mobility Show in September. It previews the upcoming Ioniq 6 performance electric car due to be unveiled in 2022. 

It will use the same platform that underpins the Ioniq 5 family car, which has received rapturous feedback since hitting the market. However, given its sportier credentials, expect Hyundai to turn up the wick on the electric motors to ensure the Ioniq 6 has enough potency to match rivals like the Porsche Taycan.

If the production car looks anything like this concept debuted at Munich, it could be a real hit. A raked roofline, grooved profile, svelte curves and stunning five-spoke wheel design certainly turned heads on the show floor this week. It also has an integrated - and clear - rear spoiler that sits above a massive LED rear cluster that hosts brake lights.   

8. Ineos Grenadier 

Price: from £48,000

Ineos Automotive's much anticipated Grenadier 4X4 will finally go into production this year

This is one that has been a long-time coming. In fact, it has been years in the making, following Land Rover's efforts to block Sir Jim Ratcliffe's efforts to bring it to market.

Buyers have been able to pre-order the new Ineos Automotive Grenadier 4X4 since the end of September, with prices confirmed to start from around £48,000. 

Production was originally due to begin this year, but the combination of the pandemic and hold-ups at its new factory on the French-German border means the BMW-engined off-roader - available as a conventional 4X4 and flat-bed truck - won't be built until July 2022 - meaning first deliveries to UK customers won't be until the end of the year.

9. Kia Sportage 

Price: from £26,745 

The all-new Sportage will arrive in UK showrooms early in the year with bold looks and an asking price starting at just under £26,750

This one could be a hit in the UK. Kia's previous-generation Sportage won over plenty of drivers with its bold looks, masses of standard equipment, practicality and affordable price. 

The 2022 version gets unconventional styling wound up to 11 with a much more daring design that will arrive in UK showrooms early in the new year.

It's also grown in dimensions, mostly to accommodate batteries for a plug-in hybrid version and conventional hybrid model. And traditionalists don't need to fear - there will be petrol and diesel engines sold for this one, too. 

10. Lotus Emira 

Price: approx £60,000 

Roaring into 2022: This is the new Lotus Emira - the sports car the Norfolk brand hopes will bring new life to the name

One brand that will look to spearhead a comeback in 2022 is Norfolk sports-car maker, Lotus. While its £2million Evija hypercar that's making the biggest headlines, the Emira is the model that bosses hope will spark the marque back to life.

Priced from around £60,000 and set to rival the Alpine A110, Jaguar F-Type and Porsche Cayman, it will be Lotus' final hurrah for the internal combustion engine with a performance-focused real-wheel-drive setup. 

The mid-mounted engine will be a choice of a 3.5-litre V6 with a manual gearbox or a Mercedes four-cylinder petrol with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The former - the one you really want - is claimed to reach 62mph from rest in under 4.5 seconds and be capable of up to 180mph. 

11. Mercedes-Benz EQE 

Price: approx £60,000 

The EQE is Mercedes' answer to an electrified E-Class luxury saloon. It should be priced around £60k

The E-Class has been a mainstay of the Mercedes range for years, and from 2022 it will be conceived as an EQE electric saloon with a range of up to 410 miles.

Marginally longer, wider and taller than the existing E-Class with a combustion engine, it looks like a smaller sibling to the EQS luxury model that's already available in the UK. Like the bigger model, top-end versions will be fitted with the MBUX Hyperscreen, which is a full-width OLED panel that runs across the entire dashboard.

Mercedes says that two variants will be sold at launch, though it has only provided information on one of them - the EQE 350 with a 90kWh battery. It will feed an electric motor that produces 288bhp and will supply around 410 miles of range on a full charge. It will be able to charge at up to 170kW, meaning plenty of added driving range from a half-hour charging session. Prices are expected to start from £60,000.  

12. Nissan Ariya 

Price: from £41,845

First deliveries of the Nissan Ariya are due to arrive in summer 2022, with prices to start from just below £42,000

Nissan's new SUV assault started with the revised Juke in 2020 and all-new Qashqai in 2021 - both being produced in Sunderland - and will continue in 2022 with the arrival of the all-electric Ariya, which is built in Japan.

Order books opened for the coupe-crossover in December, with prices starting from £41,845 for the entry-level Advance variant. The top-of-the-range Performance version will cost Britons £58,440, with deliveries arriving from the summer.

Claimed ranges - depending on whether you choose two or four-wheel-drive and battery size - is 211 miles to 310 miles.  

13. Ora Cat

Price: approx £25,000 

The Ora Cat is set to become one of Britain's cheapest electric family cars when order books finally open this year 

Chinese maker Great Wall Motors has confirmed it will enter the European and UK market, starting in 2022, with two new brands, one being Ora. And one of the first models to be available is this retro supermini called the Cat.

It will first be sold in Germany with UK orders expected to open later in 2022. Prices should be in the region of £25,000 to £30,000.

The manufacturer promises a range of up to 249 miles, acceleration to 31mph in 3.8 seconds and a total power output of 169bhp from a single electric motor.

14. Range Rover 

Price: from £94,400 

This is the new £95,000 Range Rover, which goes on sale this year and should be the most luxurious example of the premium SUV we've ever seen

The next-generation Range Rover will hit showrooms in 2022 and have a few 'firsts' for the model that first launched back in 1970.

It will be sold with the option of a seven-seat layout, all-wheel steering and, from 2024, there will be a fully-electric version - the first 100 per cent EV Land Rover product.

Although the new Range Rover's design is described as 'more evolutionary than revolutionary', there are a few standout features – not least the rear styling and 'hidden until lit' lights, which have the brake lights in the vertical section of the dark panel and the indicators in the horizontal part.

15. Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric 

Price: approx £30,000 

The all-new Mégane family car will look very different in 2022, with a raised platform and an electric drivetrain

Another mainstream EV that will be hitting the market in 2022 is Renault's Mégane E-Tech Electric - a five-door family hatch that will rival Volkswagen's ID.3, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Leaf and - to some extent - Tesla Model 3.

Prices are set to start from around £30,000 in the UK when it goes on sale around February 2022. Buyers will have the choice of a 40kWh or a 60kWh battery offering maximum ranges of 186 and 292 miles respectively and up to 130kW charging.

In the most potent form, it can hit 62mph in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 99mph. A flat floor and wheels positioned closer to each corner of the car means it will have class-leading interior space. Renault will also use it to debut an all-new infotainment system called 'OpenR Link' with a 12.3-inch digital dash panel and a tablet-like 12-inch infotainment touchscreen.

16. Skoda Fabia 

Price: from £14,905 

A refreshed Skoda Fabia will hit showrooms this year, offering a more affordable alternative to the Volkswagen Polo - while sharing the same platform

Following in the footsteps of the latest Volkswagen Polo that arrived in 2021 is the next Skoda Fabia, which will be delivered to Britons in 2022 and undercut its VW sister model on price - and the Seat Ibiza, too.

It is built on Volkswagen's tried-and-tested MQB platform, meaning a more grown up driving experience, larger dimensions and a better cabin than before.

There will be a selection of engines to choose from, though most will be three-cylinder petrols - bar a four-cylinder 1.5-litre version. Britain's first deliveries are due to arrive this month, though most won't be with their customers until 2022. 

17. Tesla Model S Plaid

Price: from £118,980 

A family car that can accelerate from zero to 60mph in under 2 seconds. Say hello to the Tesla Model S Plaid, which will be arriving with customers this year

Fans of Tesla cars will be able to get their hands on the most performance-packed machine the US firm has ever produced in 2022. It's called the Model S Tri-Motor 'Plaid' and will become one of the electric cars on sale with the longest range available when it eventually arrives on British shores.

This range-topping version of the Model S is already listed for sale in the UK, with a range of 396 miles. But it's acceleration that defines this particular Tesla, with a quoted 0-to-60mph dash completed in under 2 seconds - just, at 1.99 seconds. 

It is powered by the company's most potent three-motor electric powertrain – which delivers a claimed output of 1,100bhp.  

18. Toyota bZ4X

Price: from £41,950 

The bZ4X is Toyota's first fully-electric car and will go head-to-head with the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4 when it hits showrooms in 2022

This is Toyota's first fully-fledged electric car having pioneered the green drive with the Prius since before the turn of the century. The SUV is a sharp design with an - arguably - terrible name, called the bZ4X. 

It will be powered by a 71.4kWh battery pack that promises a range of more than 280 miles. Toyota has even taken measures to install a new 'efficient and effective' heating system that will result in only a 'modest' drop in range in colder winter conditions. 

It can be charged at speeds of up to 150kW, meaning an 80 per cent top-up can be achieved in around 30 minutes. When it arrives in 2022, the Skoda Enyaq iV and VW ID.4 will have a real contender on their hands.

19. Toyota GR86 

Price: approx £28,000 

This is the stylish new GR86 - Toyota's forthcoming new sports car that has been developed by its competition division - Gazoo Racing - and could cost below £30,000 in the UK

Another new Toyota set to grace Britain's showrooms this year is the GR86 - the Japanese firm's Gazoo Racing (hence GR) developed sports car that will replace the GT86.

It will add to the exciting GR range of Toyotas already on sale, which includes the phenomenal GR Yaris hot hatch and GR Supra coupe. 

Aimed at motoring enthusiasts looking to cling on to petrol power while it's still available, the GR86 has rear-wheel-drive with power derived from a flat-four 2.4-litre motor producing 230bhp. This should mean 0-to-62mph in around 6.2 seconds. It might just be the fun 'affordable' car of the year when deliveries arrive. 

20. Vauxhall Astra

Price: from £23,275

The new Vauxhall Astra Mk8 will start from just over £23,000 in the UK, with deliveries arriving early in the year - and an all-electric version coming in 2023

The penultimate car in our list is going to be a hugely popular one - the eighth-generation Astra, which is confirmed to be priced from just over £23,000. Order books are already open but first deliveries won't come until early in 2022. 

With sales of the once-popular model now dwindling, engineers have gone to town to make the next-generation Astra more upmarket than before in a bid to steal back sales from more premium rivals, like Volkswagen's Golf and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class - while all the time taking on long-standing opponents, namely the Ford Focus.

And from 2023, there will be an Astra-E electric version. Vauxhall has already proven that electrifying its most popular models is effective at boosting sales, with the Corsa and Corsa-e set to become the nation's most-bought car in Britain in 2021.

21. Volkswagen ID. Buzz

Price: approx from £50,000 

VW will finally unveil its electric ID.Buzz camper in 2022, which is a modern twist on the iconic 1950s van. The German company first revealed plans to create one in 2017

Volkswagen will - finally - bring its electric camper recreation to market in 2022 after four years of teasing its modern twist on the iconic 1950s Type 2 van.

The German brand confirmed at the start of December that the new model will be built at the company's Hannover factory on a specific new assembly line - and production has already started.  

It will likely be equipped with a choice of battery sizes - the largest being 111kWh, which should provide up to 340 miles of range. And as you'd expect, the interior will be a modernised version of the original, with beds, kitchen appliances and just about everything you could need for a camping trip with family and friends.

22. Volkswagen T7 Multivan

Price: from £43,160

VW's new suave seven-seat MPV: This is Volkswagen's T7 Multivan - a family bus it hopes will tempt buyers away from large SUVs. It will be priced from £43k and arrive in March 2022

The T7 Multivan, which will cost from just over £43,000, is the replacement for the T6 Caravelle and shifts to VW's more car-focused platform, rather than being based on a commercial van as its predecessors have been.

The transition to the German maker's extended MQB platform - the same one underpinning the Volkswagen Tiguan, Seat Tarraco and Skoda Kodiaq SUVs - means it will also be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

And that gives an electric-only driving range of about 30 miles - which should be more than enough to complete the there-and-back daily school run. First deliveries are due in March.
