Review: Wood House, Olney
A 45-minute train from London, nestled within an ancient woodland, sits Wood House Space. Part 1870s gamekeeper's lodge, part striking modernist double height glass extension, it has sustainability and comfort at its core.
The house is ideal for group getaways and large friend or family gatherings, due to its remote location and amazing facilities. It's kitted out from top to bottom with everything you need to ensure a smooth weekend escape.
It's got enough bedrooms to sleep up to 20 people (not to mention the bell tents that hold 10),plus crockery galore, two kitchens kitted out to host even the savviest of chefs, a hot tub, sauna, football table, top-of-the-range sound system, a pre-built bonfire, BBQ, fairylight-strewn dining table, home cinema, vast parking and a pizza oven. I challenge you to spend a weekend here and get bored; this house was built for entertaining. Top tip: do a big food order to arrive on delivery so you have everything you need for the weekend.
Rooms and facilities
There are six big double bedrooms and 2 two large bell tents included as part of the stay. The beds are extremely comfy; between this and the fresh air you are guaranteed to return home rested. Within the four bathrooms there are huge baths available and gorgeous showers that make stepping in from the great outdoors even more relaxing.
The spacious house has been curated with care and a vision for hosting and entertaining, which makes it a joy to be in. My personal highlights were watching my friends' babies play in a paddling pool while we sat in a hot tub with wine for the afternoon, followed by a bonfire and BBQ concluding the evening with marshmallows by a pre-built bonfire. It’s a space designed for you to make memories in.
House highlights
The space is carefully thought out and at the heart of every decision is sustainability The hot tub is fire heated (allow yourself two hours for it to reach the perfect temperature), as well as the sauna and plunge pool. It is such a peaceful place to roam for a weekend and to truly feel you have escaped the speed and noise of life.
What to do nearby
There is an abundance of things to do nearby. I would recommend driving as the house is very remote, or pre-book taxis which is very easy to do. Milton Keynes water park is a fantastic day out with assault courses, paddle boarding, kids play areas and a great cappuccino at the café.
Olney swimming steps are minutes away from the house, where you can enjoy a stunning wild swim. If you fancy a roast I highly recommend the Black Horse in Woburn.
