The airlines banning passengers from using power banks onboard

Two airlines have announced strict new travel bans onboard - and power banks will no longer be allowed.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air have been the latest to ban the use of power banks on their flights.

The ban will prevent passengers from using their power banks onboard.

The new rules will also stop flyers from charging them using the at-seat ports.

The banks can still be brought into the cabin.

However, they are not allowed to be used and must be kept in clear sight.

They must also not be carried in checked in luggage, as they are only permitted in hand luggage.

The ban comes amid growing fears mounting over the safety of lithium batteries while flying – and follows rule put in place by other carriers.

Last week, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) in the US issued an updated warning after reporting 50 incidents concerning power banks onboard.

They said: 'Lithium batteries stored in passenger overhead bins and or in carry-on baggage may be obscured, difficult to access, or not readily monitored by passengers or crewmembers.

'Because of this, detection of thermal runaway and firefighting measures may be delayed in flight, increasing the risk to safety.'

Vietnam Airlines currently offers flights from the UK, connecting London Heathrow to both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.

The new rules will mean passengers cannot charge their own devices using the power banks onboard.

A power bank is a portable device that can charge items like mobile phones and tablets.

They're very popular with many passengers, who use them to keep their batteries topped up while on the go.

However, a safety review raised concerns over the tech.

It comes after similar announcements from Emirates - travellers flying with the airline will soon not be allowed to bring power banks with them on flights.

Singapore Airlines, which operate flights from the UK, have also implemented restrictions on power banks.

Eva Air, Thai Airways and Air Asia have likewise introduced bans.

Tigerair and Starlux have also followed suit.
