Barcelona fail to make the most of their early kick-off and once again hand the initiative back to Real Madrid in the race for the title.
Without the injured Neymar, Luis Enrique's side never got going and it is hard to argue against the final result.
Deportivo played brilliantly and took the lead when Joselu fired in from close-range after Marc-Andre Ter Stegen failed to deal with a miscued Javier Mascherano clearance.
Barcelona hit back just moments after the half-time interval when Luis Suarez beat German Lux at his near post.
The Spanish champions pushed for a winner but fell behind for a second time when Alex Bergantinos powered a header past Ter Stegen after beating Jordi Alba in the air.
Barcelona still lead Real Madrid by one point at the top of La Liga but Zinedine Zidane's side now have two games in hand on their bitter rivals.
Deportivo, meanwhile, move eight points clear of the relegation places. What a game!
93 mins: Deportivo should put the game to bed but they make a real mess of a two-on-one opportunity.
Fajr has the chance to square it for Joselu but instead he opts to shoot and Ter Stegen saves well. Will they be made to pay?
90 mins: Messi is way off the mark with that one and it flies well over the bar. He's not had the best of games in all honesty, is that Barcelona's last chance?
There will be three minutes of added time. Barca win a corner.
90 mins: Pique eventually heads up front. Barcelona flood the box and win a free-kick on the edge of the box when Luis Suarez is taken out from behind.
87 mins: Barcelona are running out of time. Pique considers heading up front but is sent back by Luis Enrique.
Joselu wins the ball inside Barca's half but inexplicably tries to go for a third goal rather than taking it to the corner.
Barca predictably win the ball quickly and head back up the other end.
83 mins: The game is really end-to-end now and both sides have a chance to score within 30 seconds of each other.
Gerard Pique looks to be in on goal but fails to control a lofted through ball when unmarked inside the six yard box.
Deportivo break with pace but Juanfran fires his shot straight at Ter Stegen, who collects at the second attempt.
79 mins: Suarez nearly grabs his second of the game but is denied by a brilliant save from German Lux.
Sergi Roberto squares the ball across the face of goal for Suarez but the former Liverpool man fires his shot straight into the legs of Lux from six yards out.
Ten minutes for Deportivo to hang on, can Barca produce another stunning comeback?
77 mins: Paco Alcacer comes on Denis Suarez as Luis Enrique goes in search of an equaliser.
What an important goal this could prove to be for both clubs this season!
Deportivo swing the corner to the back post where Bergantinos is waiting. The defensive midfielder gets a jump on Alba and powers the ball past Ter Stegen into the bottom right corner.
The home side have been brilliant this second-half, you can't say it's not been coming.
74 mins: Barcelona have completed almost 500 passes but this second-half has by no means been all one way.
Deportivo work the ball out of defence with neat passing and eventually win a corner when Kakuta fires a shot off the legs of Pique.
Arribas gets his head to the resulting set-piece and it looks to be heading into the top corner before Ter Stegen palms it for a corner at the very last moment.
70 mins: Gama makes way for former Chelsea starlet Kakuta. He's had a great game but looks absolutely shattered.
67 mins: Deportivo have come out of their shell in this second half and are enjoying more of the possession and chances.
However, their new-found confidence is affording Barcelona's danger men much more space in midfield.
You sense another goal is on its way soon.
63 mins: Confidence is flowing through Joselu right now and the striker almost scores an audacious volley from outside the area.
Gama finds his team-mate with a lofted through ball and the Stoke front man lets it come across his body before firing a shot towards Ter Stegen, who saves well to his right.
Barcelona go down the other end where Denis Suarez fires a shot straight at Lux. Both sides are pushing to take the lead.
60 mins: Gil makes way for Turkey international Colak, who scored in successive games for Deportivo recently.
57 mins: Barcelona work the ball well to Messi on the edge of the box but the Argentine curls his effort over the bar.
Iniesta comes on for Turan, who has done virtually nothing in the game, while Rakitic replaces Gomes in midfield.
52 mins: The home side have responded really well to Suarez's goal and almost go back in front from a flowing counter-attack.
Joselu picks up the ball on the right after beating the offside trap but he can't quite find Gil inside the area.
Deportivo recycle the ball well to Gama, who fires narrowly over the crossbar. That looked to have taken a deflection but the referee awards a goal-kick. The home fans aren't happy.
Macherano gets a talking to from the referee after taking out Fajr on the left-hand touchline.
The home side want a yellow card but there was nothing really in that in truth.
46 mins: Well that didn't take very long. Deportivo have been stunned by an early goal from Luis Suarez.
The home defence fail to clear a cross and the ball falls to the Uruguayan, who rifles it past Lux at the near post. Game on!
45 mins: Barcelona get us back underway at Estadio Riazor..
So, after having almost all of the chances and most of the possession, Barcelona go in at the break a goal down.
Joselu did what all good strikers do and gambled inside the six yard box where he was able to take advantage of Ter Stegen's weak attempt at a save.
Barcelona have gone close themselves, most notably through Luis Suarez who should have scored with a free header earlier in the half.
Can Deportivo hang on for what would be their first win over Barcelona in almost nine years? The second 45 minutes is coming right up...
45 mins: Barcelona go straight up the other end and almost equalise when Pique fires narrowly over the bar from six yards out.
Deportivo are happy to drop deep and defend what they've got until half-time.
40 mins: Well, well, well. Who saw that coming? Deportivo take the lead and it's certainly against the run of play.
The corner comes in from the right-hand side and Barcelona make a real hash of the clearance.
Mascherano attempts to get it away with an acrobatic effort but can only deflect the ball back towards Ter Stegen.
Barcelona's goalkeeper gets a weak hand to it and Joselu is there to fire in from two yards out.
39 mins: What a response from the home team. Navarro curls a cross into the box which Barcelona fail to deal with - allowing it to bounce.
Joselu gets his foot over the ball and directs the ball towards goal but Ter Stegen forces it out for a corner.
35 mins: So close from the visitors! Sergi Roberto breaks through a challenge from two Deportivo defenders, who only succeed in taking each other out.
He has the opportunity to shoot from a narrow angle but instead elects to square the ball to Saurez.
However, Lux blocks the cross and Deportivo scramble clear. That's the closest we've come to a goal so far.
Joselu then goes into the book for a late challenge on Mascherano.
32 mins: Deportivo have been brilliant so far but they're dropping deeper and deeper as the half goes on.
You've seen this situation a million times and Barcelona almost always find a way to break down their opponents.
Messi nearly unlocks the defence with neat footwork but the hosts recover well to clear the ball. Pepe Mel is urging his side up the pitch, can they get to half-time level?
26 mins: Barcelona should be in front! Messi fires a free-kick straight onto the head of an unmarked Luis Suarez but the Uruguayan can only direct it straight into the grateful arms of Lux.
He rarely misses those. What a let off for the home side.
25 mins: The rain really is coming down with some force in Galicia and Deportivo almost take advantage of the conditions.
Juanfran fires a low cross towards the six-yard box which zips off the greasy surface.
However, Mascherano gets across Joselu to clear the danger. Great defending from the former Liverpool man.
22 mins: Out of nowhere Messi conjures up one of those unplayable one-twos with Busquets and suddenly finds himself with a clear sight of goal.
The ball bounces up awkwardly, however, and Albentosa gets back to block the Argentine's goal-bound shot for a corner.
It's just started bucketing it down at Riazor, the umbrellas are out in force.
17 mins: Luis Suarez almost gets to the byline but is well marshaled by Albentosa, who retrieves the ball.
However, Deportivo only partially clear the ball and Messi nearly takes advantage with a tight weaving run, which is eventually halted.
13 mins: Navarro flies in on Denis Suarez and is promptly booked by the referee after missing the ball completely. He is now suspended for his side's next match.
12 mins: It's taken a while but Barcelona are now starting to get things going in the final third.
Luis Suarez almost gets a shot away after neat build-up play with Messi but a Deportivo defender gets a foot in at the crucial moment.
Denis Suarez then sees his fizzing cross well cleared by Arribas. Better from the visitors.
9 mins: The home side looks solid enough at the back but have offered next to nothing going forward so far.
Faycal Fajr sprays the ball out wide to Juanfran but his cross is way too long for Joselu.
The striker, who is currently on loan from Stoke, does manage to get a shot off just moments later, which Ter Stegen takes comfortably.
6 mins: Denis Suarez catches Navarro with a late challenge that brings the home support to life. It's not a packed stadium which is perhaps surprising given the game's importance to both sides.
Deportivo waste the free-kick with an aimless lofted ball into the box. Not much in the way of goalmouth action so far.
4 mins: Deportivo striker Joselu gives away the first foul for a hefty challenge on Sergi Roberto in midfield.
Barcelona play the resulting set-piece short and almost get in down the right-hand side but Roberto's cut back is misplaced and the home side clear for a throw in.
2 mins: As expected, Barcelona take possession immediately and Deportivo drop back with every man behind the ball.
It could be a long afternoon for the hosts if they are happy to sit back and defend a point.
The referee blows his whistle and Deportivo get us underway...

The last time these two sides met at Estadio Riazor, Barcelona came out on top - claiming an emphatic 8-0 victory in April 2016.

He said: “The players know it will be a difficult challenge, but we have a fit squad.”
“Barcelona will come here feeling like they’re floating on clouds and maybe believe they are better than us, but our morale is also in the clouds.”
Deportivo La Coruna, meanwhile, are struggling at the other end of the table and are in real danger of relegation this season.
The Galician club are just five points above the drop zone, although they do hold a game in hand over most of their rivals at the wrong end of the table.
Former West Brom boss Pepe Mel has been tasked with keeping the club up after Gaizka Garitano was sacked in February after a run of four consecutive defeats.

His compatriot Rafinha also misses out through illness, while Jeremy Mathieu has an ankle problem. Aleix Vidal remains a long-term absentee.
Deportivo also have four players missing - Brazilians Sidnei and Guilherme are out injured while Florin Andone and Pedro Parada are suspended.
