Reds close on knockouts

Right guys, I need to dash now.

Before I go, though, I have to say what a night that was for Liverpool. A massive win away at Marseille, just when they needed it.

It wasn't just the result, though, but the performance too. That was the best I have seen Liverpool play in a very long time.

Elsewhere, both Newcastle and Chelsea got crucial wins as they take their battle for the automatic spots to the final matchday.

Thank you for joining us tonight. I'm heading off now. Goodnight.

Slot: 'We deserved that'

Arne Slot, Liverpool head coach, on TNT Sports:

It could have been a tricky place to go and it is because of their fans but also because of their players and manager. We had to be very good today and we were. We should have done better in the counter-attack. We were very positive on the ball. We scored three and everyone will be more positive than when we create five chances but score one.
In the last 13 games unbeaten, we've only been 54 minutes behind. We had many earlier chances to win it today. Today, we probably deserve what we got. We weren't unlucky like we've been so many times this season.
I know why we're not consistent and that is mainly to do when a game is open, it is completely different than playing against a low block. You cannot compare that with the game tonight when both teams want to press and play out from the back. If we're inconsistent, it's because we struggle with low blocks.
People can see what a squad we have. We have three players out with injuries and we already don't have the size of squad that our competitors have, so it's important we don't play these games.

Howe: 'Really good performance'

Eddie Howe, Newcastle manager, on TNT Sports:

Really good performance from us. A difficult opponent, tactically they are tough to play against. We were rewarded with some really good goals today.
Really good night for Yoane Wissa and I am really pleased for him. In part he came to this club for nights like today. The players embraced the challenge and I thought it was the best individual performances from a lot of the players for a while.
A lot of the players have excelled in this competition this year and Anthony Gordon is one of those. It is what we have to try to do [win in Paris]. One step at a time, it is Aston Villa first. Premier League is so important and a really tough game.

HIGHLIGHTS: Marseille 0-3 Liverpool

Liverpool fans, this is for you?

Reds supporters won't have watched many of their highlights this season because, come on, they haven't been great to watch.

But tonight is the night that changes.

I imagine Liverpool fans will be rinsing this video all night; that was one hell of a night for them.

Szoboszlai joins elite club

Dominik Szoboszlai is having some season.

Yet again, he shone in the Liverpool midfield, scoring a brilliant goal and dictating the match.

It's fair to say he has been the Reds' best player this campaign.

He has been notching up numbers similar to those of legends in the past, including the likes of Steven Gerrard.

Szoboszlai is the third Liverpool player to be involved in a goal on five consecutive Champions League games (4 goals, 2 assists) after Gerrard (5 in October 2007-February 2008 and September-November 2008) and Mohamed Salah (6 in September 2022-February 2023).

Not bad company, eh?

Caicedo: 'The game was tough'

Moises Caicedo, Chelsea midfielder, on TNT Sports:

It was a very important goal for the team so I'm so happy because the game was so tough. The team was good. We got three points and now we're going to enjoy and we're going to keep going because we have one more game to go. Tonight was the night [to score a header] so I'm so happy.
A lot of people tell me I am a leader. I don't talk too much in the dressing room but I like to show on the pitch and in training. It's so difficult but we controlled the game really well and that was important for us because in every moment we were going to score more goals.

Van Dijk: 'We exploited the space'

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool captain, on TNT Sports:

It's always difficult to play against De Zerbi's team because if you're not front-footed, then they can play out pretty easily. They keep on playing and taking a risk. We exploited the space well and I think the performance is good.

On playing with Joe Gomez:

I've played with Joe many times and it helps that we are very good friends. Pleased for him and for the whole team. Everyone put a shift in and that's how it should be. It was a very good atmosphere. It's a stadium I've never played before, and I was looking forward to it.
We always keep saying it after a win or a good result. Fully focus on recovery now, and then we go to Bournemouth, and they're hard to beat. We have to be more than ready. We fly back tomorrow. On to the next.

Reds' recovery

Liverpool's unbeaten run is actually getting quite long now.

I had a pop at it earlier, but I have to say, staying unbeaten for as long as Liverpool have is not exactly easy.

The Reds have avoided defeat in their last 13 matches in all competitions, winning seven of those games.

Want to know something crazy? It's actually the longest ongoing streak of any team from Europe’s big five leagues.

Have Liverpool finally recovered this season? Maybe they have.

'Liverpool walked it'

Stephen Warnock, former Liverpool defender, on BBC Sport:

What a performance by Liverpool. This was a very tough game on paper - Newcastle went to Marseille and struggled, but Liverpool have walked it. They played some wonderful football tonight and could have scored more than three.

Good night for the PL boys

It was actually quite a good night for all three Premier League sides.

Combined they scored seven goals, and didn't even concede a single one. Not bad, eh?

In fact, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle are now all in the top eight with one game left to play.

Liverpool sit fourth and likely need just one point against Qarabag to ensure qualification into the round of 16. Meanwhile Newcastle are sevejnth and Chelsea are eighth, both on 13 points.

Will teh trio make it to the knockouts automatically? We will see.

WATCH: Gakpo finishes off Marseille

We simply have to watch this goal.

Cody Gakpo has had his critics this season, but that was a reminder of just how well the boy can finish.

He doesn't just bend the ball into the corner, he rifles it in there. A brilliant finish.

It was the icing on the cake for Liverpool.
