No Salah, no problem

Well, who saw that coming?

In my pre-match build-up to this game, I asked whether Liverpool had a realistic chance of winning this game, and then answered my own question. I said that I couldn't see it happening.

I was proved wrong.

My colleague Lewis Steele was in the camp that Arne Slot could turn up to the San Siro and sneak a win despite the Mohamed Salah civil war that has been whirling on since Saturday. Ever the optimist, Lewis is, and he was bang on.

The Reds didn't do anything special; it wasn't a rip-roaring performance that made you sit back and say, 'Liverpool are back'. But it didn't need to be.

This was a professional display, a style of performance that the Reds have been lacking for most of the season. One that earned them a huge win away at Inter Milan.

Dominik Szoboszlai's late penalty sealed the three points, and while the spot kick was soft, it was the bit of luck that this Reds team so desperately needed.

The start of what seems like the Salah-less era is a good one. But the question is, can Slot's side kick on?

Anyway, I am going to dash now. Thanks for joining, and I will see you all soon.

Jones turns up

After Liverpool's devastating loss to PSV, Curtis Jones came out all guns blazing, saying things weren't good enough.

Since then, he has been one of Liverpool's best players.

Tonight, along with completing 100 per cent of his dribbles against Inter (3/3), Curtis Jones led all players in the match for completed passes (67/70), line-breaking passes (14) and passes breaking the opposition’s defensive line.

One hell of a shift from the midfielder.

'Uninspiring but crucial win'

Mohamed Salah could take solace from his sofa by knowing that, unlike the title of the 1971 James Bond film and accompanying Shirley Bassey soundtrack, diamonds are not indeed forever.
Boss Arne Slot has evolved his setup from the tried-and-tested way that won them the Premier League but his 4-4-2 diamond has thus far failed to sparkle, evident in an uninspiring but nevertheless crucial victory over Inter Milan at San Siro.
The transition from the Mo Salah era to the No Salah era – whether a short phase or a more permanent end of a chapter – has shown some minor signs of promise but, overall, not produced much to write about on those postcards sent home to the Egyptian.

Van Dijk: 'Win doesn't change anything'

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool skipper, on Amazon Prime:

It's a good feeling of winning. Especially in a period we are in, trying to find consistency and something to build on. Hopefully, tonight is one of those performances. It was always going to be tough. We handled the game well. It could have been a 0-0 game in the end but it ended positively for us in the end. It doesn't change anything. There's obviously so much noise from the outside world, which is normal when you don't perform. It's deserved as well. We want to improve, we want to be consistent and win games. We're not doing it as much as we like. We have to stick together and be a unit as we have been. That's what Liverpool stands for.

On Mohamed Salah:

It's difficult but it's a collective difficult situation that we're all in. Between Mo and the club, things are going on and he's not here today, that's the reality. I don't think anything has changed in terms of our focus and determination. I'm not the one to speak if someone has to apologise. It's him airing his feelings for the past couple of days. That's something the club has to deal with, obviously, me as well. The focus was there, nothing else changed. He trained as well.
The reality also is that Mo is going to Africa soon. I've known him for such a long time, we are good friends and have been through highs and lows. We speak and those types of things will stay indoors as it should be. We have to brace ourselves and be against the outside noise. The most important thing is that you speak with each other. You have to recover and get back to Brighton already. You have to celebrate good moments and enjoy it otherwise, what's the point of winning? We stay overnight here, we have to sleep well and eat well. We try to never get too high or too low.

Supporters sing for Slot

It doesn't feel as though the Liverpool fans want Arne Slot out, does it?

If anything, it seems they have banded in together in support of the head coach ever since Mohamed Salah's comments.

With that win, he may have just afforded himself a lot more time in the hot seat than he had before.

A big night for the Dutchman.

Szobo shines again

Dominik Szoboszlai is having some season.

I know that sounds weird, given how dreadful Liverpool have been for the majority of the campaign, but he has been a shining light amongst all the gloom.

Once again tonight, he stood up to be counted right when the Reds needed him most.

Szoboszlai’s penalty was Liverpool’s latest ever winning goal scored away from home in the Champions League (87:24), as well as their second-latest penalty winner in the competition, after Steven Gerrard in September 2014 (92:29 v Ludogorets).

The strike of a leader.

Not only did he score the winner, but he was a nuisance all game, both going forward and at the back.

Where would Liverpool be without him, eh?

'Reds still need a result at the weekend'

Daniel Sturridge, former Liverpool striker, on Amazon Prime:

As a football club players and staff, you want to move on as quickly as possible. Tonight allows them to do that. It's a difficult moment for the team, this hasn't happened in the last four or five years. They will go home feeling proud tonight.
It's about enjoying tonight, but knowing that there is a massive game at the weekend, and there will still be talk if they don't get a result at the weekend.

Players rally for Slot

If I were Arne Slot, I would be a very proud man right now.

Before this game, I was convinced that Mohamed Salah's comments reflected how a lot of the dressing room were feeling. I thought there may be unrest in the whole squad, and the Dutchman had lost the belief of his players.

Well, maybe I'm wrong.

Liverpool played like a team that was behind their manager tonight; they gave it their all to get that result over the line.

Maybe Slot's love affair with the Reds is not quite ready to end yet.

Robertson: 'We all needed that'

Andy Robertson, Liverpool defender, speaking on Amazon Prime:

Huge result. We knew we were coming to a tough place, to a team that's in a good moment. We had to show fight and dig in. The clean sheet was crucial and then we go and scored the goal.
The handball for me, I think it took seven or eight minutes. If you do that, then you have to stick to the on-field decision. You have to stick to the decision. The penalty did look soft but that's given anywhere else on the pitch.
We all needed it. We know the results and performances aren't good enough. It's important this club is in the Champions League. It was a huge result for all of us.

On Mohamed Salah:

A tough situation. We're talking about one of the greatest players to play for this club. I signed in the same window as him. Whatever has happened, happened. Internally, we're all together.
That'll be up to other people, it's not up to me. I love playing with Mo Salah and I hope to continue playing with him. We know how important being in that top eight is and avoiding a play-off. We got unlucky last season with who we drew.

Liverpool end Inter's three-year unbeaten run

Football, eh?

Yep, that sub-heading is real. The worst Liverpool side we have seen in at least a decade has turned up at Inter Milan's home and beaten them.

That is impressive enough, but what makes it even better is the fact that Inter had not lost at the San Siro in the Champions League since 2022.

The Reds have just ended a three-year unbeaten run. Mental.

WATCH: Szoboszlai wins it

Liverpool fans, this is for you.

I can only imagine the nerves that were coursing through Dominik Szoboszlai as he stepped up to the spot here.

Well, while he would have had them, he didn't exactly show them as he struck through the ball.

Brilliant hit, and a brilliant celebration to boot.
